Paris, France (CNS) – The French edition of Vogue magazine has provoked racist controversy after painting a white model black for its photo spread in its October issue.

Dutch model Lara Stone’s face and body were covered with dark makeup in some of the photos for the fashion bible. In later pages, she was painted in white, with some parts of her seem to be cracking.

The photo spread, styled by editor-in-chief Carine Roitfeld and shot by photographer Stephen Klein, garnered strong criticism from various individuals and organizations, saying the move was tactless.

U.S. fashion website Jezebel branded the magazine as “culturally insensitive,” while French anti-racism group SOS Racisme described it as “tactless.”

The controversy came after an Australian variety show featured a group of contestants whose faces were covered in black paint, which they said as homage to the Jackson Five. American singer/actor Harry Connick Jr, who was invited in the show to be a judge, publicly condemned the act.
