A Comparative View of the Human and Animal Frame
A Comparative View of the Human and Animal Frame by Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins was published in 1860. This work fits into the second category of materials on the History of Science and Technology Web site, that is, unique or valuable titles in science and technology held by the UW-Madison Libraries. Hawkins’ intent was “to give a comparative view of the variation in form of the bony skeleton or framework of those animals most frequently required by the artist, designer, or ornamentist.” The animals represented are some of the most familiar and important, such as the lion, the horse, the bear, the gorilla, and others. The textual explanations of variation in animal form did not yet reflect the influence of Charles Darwin’s evolutionary theory, but the detailed illustrations added much to the understanding of mammalian anatomy.
Planet Shanghai
Justin Guariglia’s book Planet Shanghai excerpted here is filled with wonderful snapshots of every day life in Shanghai. The skyscrapers next to run-down neighborhood. The food and fresh fruit being sold at the market. The shoes people wear there. Their hairstyles. Old guys hanging out in chairs they set down on the streets. And yes, people in pajamas. Lots of people in pajamas.
Take a look, then go get the book. Like the people of Shanghai, it’s full of charm.

Draw and Fold Over
The Draw and Fold Over is an online version of Picture Consequences. Players draw part of a figure and then send it to their friends to carry on. When the head, body, legs and feet are all done, you can watch it being drawn. The site is to promote the Campaign for Drawing’s Big Draw event later this year.
