“One night when I was messing around with Audacity making an absurdly long mix tape and all 60 tracks where imported to the same point in the time-line. I played it once just to see what it sounds like and I basically got phase cancellation or a demonic white noise. These is the graphic equivalent of the audio signal.
I thought it was pretty funny that black metal makes white noise. It perpetuates a belief in a binary hierarchy between good and evil. If the inversion of a symbol or ideology equates to the antithesis of its initial reading then the possibilities of formal analysis are limited to a rhetorically frozen gesture. If evil author equates evil audience, then the range of existential options is too easily determined and eliminates the vast sea of contextual grey.”

Most innovative design and craftsmanship using natural wood
The winners of the 2010 Wood Awards were announced last week, celebrating the most innovative design and craftsmanship using natural wood in the UK. Held at the Carpenters Hall in London, winners, nominees, judges and supporters gathered to view the architecture, interior and product design projects receive their much-deserved prizes.
The top prize of the night, the Gold Award, was given to the newly renovated Stoke Newington Town Hall in London (above), completed by architect Hawkins\Brown. After also winning the Conservation/Restoration category, this fully refurbished grade II listed art deco building was chosen by the judges, who said ‘old and new has been seamlessly combined [and] every detail designed and executed to the highest standard.’ A highly commended prize was awarded to the restoration of St Thomas’ Church in Newhey, Rochdale (below), designed by Lloyd Evans Prichard.
Special prizes on the night were awarded to shortlisted entries deemed unique and outstanding. The Innovation award went to the Achair (above), designed by David Colwell, which applies expert knowledge of specialist making techniques that work perfectly with the qualities of the material. College Road, a remarkable six-bedroom private property in Dulwich, South London (below) designed by Knox Bhavan Architects, was awarded the Outstanding Craftsmanship Award. Meanwhile the award for the Best Use of British Timber was given to Newbattle Abbey Bridge in Edinburgh, designed by Forestry Civil Engineering.
