Hello, I’m ZSO. (On paper you may also know me as Sara Blake). I’m an illustrator and fine artist living and loving in New York City. ZSO (pronounced |zō|) is a collection of letters that I find aesthetically and phonetically beautiful. Together they make sound much like “so,” the adverb which means “to such a great extent.” I am a person of extremes, for better or worse (most often the latter), so the ring of it was fitting, and the moniker has since stuck for good. I graduated from New York University’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study with a concentration in Graphic Art and Postmodern Studies—I’ve been working in design and art direction ever since. With a background in advertising I now work as a freelance illustrator and exhibiting artist.

Two years ago, Judy Gelles was volunteering at an inner city public school and was assigned to a fourth-grade class. The school was as diverse as they come with children from African American, Hispanic and Asian immigrants. After several months of helping the students with their reading skills, she felt the need to connect with them on a deeper level. Mostly, she wanted to find out their stories.
