Meet Generation C – A Generation of Creative Generalists

Since a little over 7 years, I’ve been introducing myself as a Creative Generalist to all and sundry to little effect. The term although widely the most appropriate title is yet to be truly understood or fathomed in context with the generation that grows with every advance in technology today. In fact just the other day, I was asked via the newly adopted Facebook Questions how I would define a person who creates content for the print, web and mobile mediums. Answers ranged from Digital Content Designer to New Media Warrior and some old skool and new age funk thrown in for good measure. But the question really is about how this new generation of digital creatives is remaking the way we buy, sell and communicate with the world.

Dogs by Jill Greenberg

Since the age of 10, Jill Greenberg has staged photographs and created characters using the mediums of drawing, painting, sculpture, film and photography. She is known worldwide for her uniquely human animal portraits which intentionally anthropomorphize her subjects, as well as her infamous series, “End Times” which struck a nerve in its exploration of religious, political, and environmental themes exploiting the raw emotion of toddlers in distress. Her newest work marks a return to the postmodern feminist theory that inspired her senior thesis, “The Female Object” as an art student at RISD in the 80’s: “The disciplinary project of femininity” and the predetermined failure of all women who attempt to “succeed” at it.

Fine Art Photographer: Klaus Tiedge

German-born Klaus Tiedge has been a prominent figure in the field of commercial photography for more than 20 years, having worked in numerous countries including India, Japan, Brazil and the USA. In 2001 Klaus moved to South Africa and settled down in Cape Town taking full advantage of the a thriving fashion industry and optimal conditions that the region is renowned for.

In 2008, Tiedge decided to shelve his commercial endeavors and pursue his passion for fine art photography as he turned his attention to the beauty and diversity of the African continent. Embracing the “modern digital darkroom”, Klaus has successfully traversed the boundaries between painting and photography. His editioned wildlife photographs have a unique stylized quality to them. Tiedge displays the distinct ability to give equal attention to the animals and the environment in which they are captured in. His impressions portray the animal as if it is being photographed for the front cover of a glossy magazine. Qualities of master lighting, brilliant composition and technical perfection are emblematic of an artist who has obviously done his time in the commercial arena.

Besides his successful wildlife imagery, Tiedge is also kept busy with other projects. In 2010 he completed a series of stylized “on location” portraits of the Himba and Zemba people in North Eastern Namibia and an ageless portrayal of single baobab trees.
