This beautifully minimal modern complex by Fearon Hay Architects is masterfully situated on New Zealand’s Waiheke Island, looking out over Matiatia Bay. The home, built as a series of out-buildings, rests lightly on the landscape making use of floor to ceiling windows maximizing incredible ocean views.
What I find most compelling aside from the simple yet elegant materials is that even in a contemporary construction, the hearth remains at the center of the home. The warmth of a fire at night brings life to residence as the surf crashes against the rocks below. This would be a house I would certainly reference when thinking of a mountain or ocean retreat of my own.
