White projects purity, cleanliness, and neutrality. Doctors don white coats, brides traditionally wear white gowns, and a white picket fence surrounds a safe and happy home. The Gallery House (which is interestingly juxtaposed in Singapore’s red light district) is a dual purpose building that is used as a home and as an art gallery.
The first floor contains the gallery space and the kitchen, and the above floors contain the bed, baths, and private spaces. Sounds traditional, but the design was very challenging since part of the lot was in between two very long walls. In order to bring light into the narrow spaces, white paint was used throughout with the use of large skylights and long windows. In addition the designers used small gardens to decorate the space and create visual breaks from the sharp lines. Recessed lighting gave the interior spaces a contemporary look while also serving as spotlights for artwork.
