Keira is all about combination and contrast, soft with rough, classic with modern, natural with industrial. It’s the appropriate mix between a gentle material as wood, a tough one as steel, and agressive geometries. Continue reading at The Method Case

Mataerial Introduction by Petr Novikov, Sasa Jokic & Joris Laarman Studio

themethodcase.com Mataerial Introduction by Petr Novikov, Sasa Jokic & Joris Laarman Studio

themethodcasedotcom Mataerial Introduction by Petr Novikov, Sasa Jokic & Joris Laarman Studio

MATAERIAL is the result of the collaborative research between Petr Novikov, Saša Jokić from theInstitute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) and Joris Laarman Studio. IAAC tutors representing Open Thesis Fabrication Program provided their advice and professional expertise. During the course of the research we developed a brand new digital fabrication method and a working prototype that can open a door to a number of practical applications. The method that we call Anti·gravity Object Modeling has a Patent-Pending status.

Extrusion Bowls by Apparatu (video edition The Method Case)

ExtrusionBowls by Apparatu themethodcase 2 Extrusion Bowls by Apparatu (video edition The Method Case)

The Method Case is really proud to present Extrusion Bowls by apparatu. A video created by the collaboration between Apparatu and The Method Case. The project starts from one of the pieces which resulted from the workshop “Fragil” held by Apparatu in summer 2010. Guim Espelt i Estopà one of the participants, designed the pieces after discovering an apparently impossible texture. The process began with the deformation of a hollow cylinder of extrusioned clay, after which we focussed on the cracks that were generated. By trial and error we hit on the formula in the wheel: for the creation of a bowl, the only way to conserve the cracks is to place the cylinder in the wheel and push from the centre towards the periphery. By expanding the grey mass while spinning, unique and random textures appear on the surface leaving the coloured interior as the only controlled element.

Black Hole is a series of images, which shows paint modeled by the centripetal force. The setup is very simple: Various shades of acrylic paint are dripped onto a metallic rod, which is connected to a drill. When switched on, the paint starts to move away from the rod, creating these amazing looking structures.Continue reading at The Method Case

The Method Case creates a series of posters in order to enhance design process and responsible consumption. TMC is a website specialized in the world of design, architecture and visual communication that started early 2011. Lo Siento is a small studio that specially enjoys taking over the whole concept of the identity projects. Its main feature is an organic and physical approach to the solutions, resulting in a field where graphic and industrial design dialogue, always searching an alliance with the artisan processes. Borja Martínez, the founder of LoSiento, a studio that specializes in 3D typography, packaging and product design. Young and imaginative, they are constantly pushing the limits of what can be done with paper. Tea Set by Tomás Alonso

tea set by tomas alonso themethodcase 22 650x975 Tea Set by Tomás Alonso

People who know Tomás Alonso’s work, often executed in simple wood, they strike one as light, three-dimensional sketches, will hardly associate him with silver. So their (Wiener Silber Manufactur) collaboration for Vienna Design Week 2011 was all the more fascinating. Alonso approached it with the “functionality of the pattern” in mind: a plain tea service with fluted pattern on the underside of the set and the upper side of the tray, both interlocked with each other.

engineering temporality by markunpoika themethodcase 13 Engineering Temporality by Studio Markunpoika

The topic for his thesis spawned out from a personal agony within his family: his grandmothers declining health. Once a strong and bold woman, now only a fainting image of her past. Her Alzheimer’s disease is unravelling the fabric of her life, knot by knot, and vaporising the very core of her personality and life, her memories, and turning her into a shell of a human being. He felt the urge to connect design to the human emotional sphere and to values that reflect how we are as human beings, by trying to create a bridge between the metaphysical and the material world using design as medium of expression…

System for shaping wood through lightning strikes by Craig Barrow

system for shaping wood through lightning strikes by craig barrow 01 750x499 System for shaping wood through lightning strikes by Craig Barrow

A public artefact focusing and directing electrical energy from lightning strikes. When struck the seven-meter high system sends a current down an arranged set of stainless steel forks drilled into a large piece of wood. In the same way as when a tree is struck, the current takes the most electrically conductive route to the earth, splitting the wood down regions of sap-rich cells and air pockets rapidly expanded at colossal force by the passing current. What is revealed are beaten and battered forms, capturing the intensity and energy of the split second lightning strike. Situated upon isolated hilltops, the object focuses our attention on these monumental and unrestrained forces of nature and connects us with this unprecedented, fleeting moment of power.

Inrou Japanese pocket box by Rui Pereira

inrou japanese pocket box by rui pereira 11 750x488 Inrou Japanese pocket box by Rui Pereira

Inrou is a traditional Japanese pocket box used in the ancient times to carry medicines and small objects. It was usually made of wood with a lacquer layer finish. Inspired by this tradition of carrying valuable items in a pocket box we developed this backpack by mixing this Japanese tradition with the Portuguese ‘tarro’( a cork container used in the south of Portugal to preserve food). We created a monocoque of cork which protects nowadays most precious object, the laptop.
