Pewter Transmutation by Raphael Volkmer in THISISPAPER MAGAZINE
Pewter Transmutation by Raphael Volkmer in thisispaper.com
“The investigate in relations between object and receiver and the question of how an object is able to provoke curiosity about its story is the basis of my interest. The basic idea was to use experimental handcraft as a storytelling medium to translate old memories and nostalgia into a ‘new’ object that might provoke curiosity through its aesthetical appearance. The inspiration arrived from an old German tradition of casting pewter in water on New Years Eve as a ritual to forecast the future…”

Jens Risom’s Block Island Retreat by Gary Nadeau for Dwell in thisispaper.com

How abstract can a landscape become while still remaining a landscape?
“In the late 1960s, designer Jens Risom sought an affordable vacation home for his family on Block Island, off the coast of Rhode Island. Now some 45 years later, the prefab cottage still exists to serve the needs of the growing Risom brood.”

How abstract can a landscape become while still remaining a landscape?
“I tried to find the answer to this question during extended travels, by searching for a fully natural landscape, not manmade, and lacking any cultural presence. I found these “natural-born” sites in New Mexico – deserts formed by rocks and sand and all forms of erosion. A barren landscape, too, with scarce vegetation…

Souvenirs de Paris by Leslie David in thisispaper.com

“The concept store Colette commissioned us for postcards underneath the theme of Parisian scenery. We selected black and white pictures of Parisian monuments from dated archives. At that time, we were experimenting with applying paint textures on visuals. We wanted to associate the unexpected colours and relief of the paint with the romantic feel of the photographs.”

The Closing of 13th Venice Biennale in thisispaper.com

This may seem like a strange time to write about the Architecture Biennale. But there is one good reason why I chose to write about it just now.
By now, you must have read tons of articles on the Biennale, especially in late August, when the show opened. You’ve heard what Wolf Prix thinks about this year’s theme, and you may even have taken the time to figure out whether he has a point…

By the Bus Stop by Richard Hooker in THISISPAPER MAGAZINE
By the Bus Stop by Richard Hooker in thisispaper.com

Every few minutes of the day, all over the capital, people gather into small groups to share the same space and fleeting moment in time. Simply to wait for something routine and forgettable as a London bus. In transient, with time to kill, and often amongst strangers, each collection of these individuals proves completely unique from the next. The way people take ownership of the space, how they congregate, is often better than anything an art director or photographer could ever deliberately replicate. Each collection provides a little insight into London’s incredible diversity, how we relate to our sur- roundings, and each other…

Slip House by Carl Turner Architects in thisispaper.com

Occupying one of four plots forming a gap in a typical Brixton terrace, Slip House constitutes a new prototype for adaptable terraced housing. Three simple ‘slipped’ orthogonal box forms break up the bulk of the building and give it it’s striking sculptural quality. The top floor is clad in milky, translucent glass planks, which continue past the roof deck to create a high level ‘sky garden’. Designed to Code for Sustainable Homes Level 5, it features ‘energy piles’ utilising a solar assisted ground source heat pump creating a thermal store beneath the building…

Purist Chair by Elisa Honkanen in thisispaper.com

“I’ve been a fan of Angelo Mangiarotti’s Eccentrico table for a long time, and I wanted to see if it is possible to make a chair with the same concept (using gravity joints).”
So the plywood board that forms the seat has four inclined holes for the wooden bars, which create legs and support for the backrest. To stabilize the structure is enough to have two screws that’ll fix the lateral wooden bars to each-other and neoprene cord to unite the whole structure…

Playing with senses by Makiko Shinoda in thisispaper.com

What makes a toy a good toy? Room for sensory discovery, imagination and creativity. Research that Makiko Shinoda has done on the relationship between children and their toys shows that these elements are not found as often in plastic toys or computer games in which form and function are standardized. But there is a different way. A universal toy set that evolves over time and with a child’s age…
