THE KLAX: “Get Busy Living” – Ryan De La Hoz
Header Graphic Design: Matt Carvalho of The Deft Collective
Every so often an artist goes from being unknown to a force to be reckoned with in what seems like a matter of a moment. Ryan De La Hoz is currently living in that moment. KLAX is proud to bring you “GET BUSY LIVING”, a short film about Ryan De La Hoz and the meanings surrounding his work. The one single take away from his work revolves around the word fragility. The definition of fragility is the quality or state of being easily broken or destroyed. Ryan has the ability to expose beauty to things that could easily be misconstrued as negative or detrimental to human kind. As we move forward in a very complex and challenging global culture, Ryan’s work speaks a simpler language of recognizing the beauty that surround us. There is a constant theme in Ryan’s work of hope for a better tomorrow, and that is as beautiful as the work itself.
RetroTV: Donald Glover – Two Sides of Cool (pt 2) (Trailer)

Donald Glover should be one tired man. Whether he’s starring alongside snarky comedy heavyweights like Joel McHale and Chevy Chase in NBC’s freshman hit Community, taping one-man specials for Comedy Central, or writing and releasing movies like Mystery Team with his comedy troupe Derrick Comedy, this Emmy Award-winning former 30 Rock writer is on the verge of transitioning from underground hustler to comedic and cultural player.
RetroTV: Mayer Hawthorne – Two Sides of Cool (pt 1) (Trailer)

Ann Arbor, Michigan is a world away from the poetically soulful sounds that Mayer Hawthorne channels on A Strange Arrangement, his first album for LA’s Stones Throw Records, but don’t tell him that. With several successful singles that have been championed by everyone from Starbucks to Spike Jonze, Hawthorne’s fresh take on classic R&B and soul is gaining fans by the minute.
RetroTV: The Brooklyn Circus SF Rises Above the Tide (Trailer)
All of us here at The Retrospective are big fans of The Brooklyn Circus and we couldn’t be more excited that lately they’ve been getting more press than Christina Hendricks of Mad Men. From a profile on Justin Timberlake’s blog to a speaking gig at one of our favorite conferences held by PSFK, people have been scoping Brooklyn Circus in a big way, and so it was a shock to learn that the Brooklyn Circus SF shop has been closed due to flooding for nearly two weeks.
Instead of dwelling on the negative impact of these unfortunate circumstances, The Brooklyn Circus SF saw the downtime as an opportunity to strengthen their business. Not only have they made some exciting changes to the store, they’ve also come up with some new ways to increase their presence in the cultural landscape of San Francisco. They recently celebrated their grand re-opening with a raucous in-store party and we were there to socialize with and support our friends, as well document the event. The full video will be live on Thursday, April 29th but in case you can’t wait here’s a sneak peek at what went down.
The Klax – We Ride At Night x Gallery Heist
We Ride At Night, the creative collective founded by Jason Vivona, Brian Henderson and Matthew Izen, has their sights set high. From t-shirts to skatedecks, this ambitious group has amassed an impressive array of artists to create imaginative, humorous, and all-around striking work centered around the ever-evolving world of skateboard culture. A newcomer to the San Francisco art scene, Gallery Heist played host for the kick-off party of the group’s inaugural namesake show. And just like their name implies, this show won’t be around forever; it closes Wednesday, April 28th.
Major Noize at Terminal 5
If you’ve been in LA at any point during the last three years, chances are you’ve heard about HARDfest. The city’s premiere party for some of the nastiest electro acts around, HARDfest has staged haunted Halloween mansions with the likes of Deadmau5 and Justice and brought heat to sweaty summer afternoons with all-out assaults from MSTRKRFT, Crookers, and Rusko. It was NYC’s turn this past Saturday: HARDfest partnered with The Bowery Presents to bring its signature blend of bass and blitz to Manhattan’s cavernous Terminal 5 with a lineup that included Russian noisemaker Proxy, dancehall upstarts Major Lazer and electro wunderkind Boys Noize.

BLVCK SCVLE “Balance of Opposites”
Black Scale is quickly becoming the unsung hero of street wear culture. Commanding absolute respect on both the ground level and throughout the international fashion market, it’s gone from good idea to San Francisco flagship in only a little over a year. But unconditional admiration and global acclaim is never a simple coincidence: behind every great empire is a leader with vision, and in the case of Black Scale, there’s MEGA.
In a world where balance is everything, MEGA effortlessly walks the edge as if it were the norm, striking the balance of opposites with every stride. This first-hand story takes you beyond the label to hear MEGA’s brilliant perspective, inducting you into the society of secrets known as Black Scale.
Holding Court with UK artist V V Brown

British singer-songwriter, V.V. Brown is on the verge of becoming one of the big acts of 2009. With her mix of 1960’s pop and contemporary soul, Brown has the music scene abuzz about her upcoming debut album. Not only does the girl have a great voice, but her lyrical content takes the listener on a musico-emotional adventure. V.V. can currently be seen in the pages of Vogue magazine and her fans in the United Kingdom can grab her album Traveling Like The Light when it hit stores in June. I was lucky enough to snag an interview with V.V. in which she talks about her music, new fame, and being compared to other artists.
