The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial was dedicated in October 2011. It’s one of the only monuments on the National Mall that does not honor a president. The inscription on the side of the sculpture, “I was a drum major for justice, peace and righteousness” has been controversial. Maya Angelou argued the quote was taken out of context.
