Eco-friendly pavilion from 2000 recycled beer crates
Eco-friendly architecture is in vogue around the world with innovative building materials cropping up. The latest is 2000 beer crates used to make Boxel, a temporary experimental pavilion created by digital design students from the University of Applied Sciences in Detmold, Germany within a week. Turning beer crate into building is sure an eye-popper!!
The temporary construction was designed using parametric software to control the position of the boxes in relation to the overall geometry and to analyse the structural performance. Several static load tests were made to understand the structural behaviour of the unusual building material. In parallel to a series of shearing and bending tests in the university’s laboratory of material research, the structural concept was simulated and optimised using FEM-Software. Continue reading »

Beautiful Pinecone-Inspired Lamps Made from Paper Pulp by Jonathon Coles
UK-based Jonathon Coles Lighting & Design has created a lighting fixture named ‘the Strobilus Lamp’ for architectural lighting company Paviom, which resembles a bunch of pine cones.
The Strobilus lamp is designed to be a highly recyclable and efficient light source. The lamp is made of up to 95% recyclable materials such as paper pulp. The design is inspired by the shape of an open pine cone and utilises 100 leaves made from 100% recycled paper pulp mounted on a recyclable body. The lamp with a soft and organic shape creates a warm and pleasing ambience.
The Strobilus pendant light eliminates glare from all angles with its positioned leaves and the pendant appears to glow warmly with a diffused light.

‘Constellation 2913’ pendant light fixtures by Fire Farm

The Constellation fixtures are available in four different sizes with multiple finishing options. They are composed of metal points made from perforated sheet metal with internal light diffusing panels, providing moiré shimmering effects as one moves around them. The fixture also features a dichroic diffuser option that creates transitioning colours in an opalescent effect.
Mood Chair: Interactive furniture with embedded lighting
UK-based interdisciplinary design collaboration Aether and Hemera has designed interactive furniture called the ‘Mood Chair’ that changes colour depending on the response its sensors receive from the environment and users.
Mood Chair technically consists of partially translucent units, LEDs, embedded micro-chips and sensors. These devices react to the colours that its sensors perceive from the environment and translate them with custom software into lighting effects for the furniture.
Such responsive installations are seen as complementing the architectural space based on the idea that digital interactive fixtures will contribute to create an innovative and high-quality environment responding to the behaviour of its users. This is achieved by visually expressing the activities surrounding them.

Jean Nouvel designs Horizons Tower in France inspired by Hanging Gardens
Horizons Tower or Tour Horizon, a 19-storey office building designed by the Pritzker Prize winning French architect Jean Nouvel, is currently underway in Paris, France.

Nouvel has crafted the building in such a way that it can be articulated in a number of ways. This has been achieved by the incorporation of different visual elements by stacking three looks on top of each other with each stepping back from the previous footprint. This structure helps in offering levels of terraces, resembling a kind of modern hanging gardens of Babylon.

9/11 Museum: Commemoration to the Twin Tower tragedy
Not too many people would like to be reminded of the tragic tales of 9/11. At the same time not too many would like to forget what happened on that fateful day. The 9/11 Museum, being built 70 feet below ground zero, is unfolding as a chilling reminder of the gap created in the Manhattan skyline after the collapse of the twin towers.
Designed by New York-based Davis Brody Bond Aedas, the 120,000 square feet museum will be built below the eight acre memorial plaza. The entrance of the museum will feature a ground level glass pavilion that will lead visitors to a 665-feet long ribbon or a gently sloped ramp that will wind down 45 feet to the Memorial Hall or lobby of the museum. The ribbon is a model of the ramp that was used during the construction of the towers and later for the rescue efforts. Prior to the lobby is a three-pronged trident column recovered from the trade center rubble. Continue reading »
