Photography has one amazing feature – the pictures may often work like open windows into the new and previously unknown worlds. Photographic images can thus be treated as one of the possible ways to discover and learn the life around us in those its aspects, which lie beyond our reach or beyond the physical capabilities of human organs of sense. James and other apes by James Mollison
James Mollison was born in Kenya in 1973 and grew up in England. After studying Art and Design at Oxford Brookes University, and later film and photography at Newport School of Art and Design, he moved to Italy to work at Benetton’s creative lab, Fabrica. His work has been widely published throughout the world including by Colors, The New York Times Magazine, the Guardian magazine, The Paris Review, The New Yorker and Le Monde. His latest book Disciples was published in October 2008 following its’ first exhibition at Hasted Hunt Gallery in New York. In 2007 he published The Memory of Pablo Escobar- the extraordinary story of ‘the richest and most violent gangster in history’ told by hundreds of photographs gathered by Mollison. It was the original follow-up to his work on the great apes – widely seen as an exhibition including at the Natural History Museum, London, and in the book James and Other Apes (Chris Boot, 2004). Mollison lives in Venice with his wife.

Landscapes from the Air
Being terrestrial creatures, humans got used to see and perceive the surroundings from the surface of the Planet. Walking or driving the streets, we can see the trees, buildings, yards, and other people around us in relatively great details. However, our vision is limited and we cannot perceive the entire image of the district or town, we live in, other than by looking at the map. Rising up into the sky on board of a plane allows a human to see the world from an absolutely different angle. It is like scaling down the image in Google Earth application – we just omit the smallest details, such as houses or cars, concentrating on the entire image of a particular locality.

In a window by Julio Bittencourt
Julio Bittencourt was born in Brazil, grew up in São Paulo and spent his adolescence in New York. In 2000 he began his career at the photo department of Valor Economico, the major financial publication in Brazil where he worked as a staff photographer and as assistant-editor for four years. Since 2006 Julio has been working as a freelance photographer for magazines, newspapers, advertising and corporate clients in Brazil, Europe, Canada, Japan and the United States, in addition to his personal projects. Julio’s work has been exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide and published in magazines such as Geo, National Geographic, Stern, Le Monde, The Guardian, Esquire, Leica World Magazine, among others. In 2008 he published his first book, In a window of Prestes Maia 911 Building, which was awarded the Leica Oskar Barnack Award. Julio currently lives in São Paulo.
How to get out of a Creative Block
As creative artists and designers we often ‘create’ a time, space or mindset that nurtures our creativity. This can be anything from one’s favorite desk, park or a particular time of the day when we find the best ideas available to us. In my last post, I spoke of using uses the discipline to instill discipline, routine and regulate one’s life which ascribed to the ’350-words-a-day-no-matter-what’ system of writing by Graham Greene. Using that analogy this time we will focus on Jack Kerouac‘s fabled ‘wrote-it-on-a-roll-of-toilet-paper-while-drunk’ methodology. While many may find my contradictory perspective unnerving, it may well be so. This is an ancient Zen technique which advices the disciple along one path only to advocate the very opposite once the disciple grows comfortable in his chosen methodology. Intrigued? Read on…
