TRACKS IN THE SNOW
Tracks on the snow: a journey in Mario Rigoni Stern’s Russia.
In winter 2009 I travelled around the russian country near Voronez, reaching the Don River just to the tightened curve few kilometers far from Rossosh’. This was the most oriental linefront reached by the Italian Army during the Second World War.The reportage runs over the words of the novels “Il sergente nella neve” (The sergent in the snow) and “Ritorno sul Don” (Back to Don river) written by Mario Rigoni Stern (1921-2008), who fighted there and took part of the disastrous retreat from Russia.He also went back to those lands several times after the war and had a deep respect for russian people.
I shot the hole reportage with a R2 filter (red filter for black and white film) because I felt red as color of Communism and Soviet; red like the blood of fallen soldiers; and because red is a strong, alive color.
The digital sensor of my Nikon camera got crazy for that choice…
