Gaia 09 - A project to raise awareness for climate change:

Climate change and the conservation of our planet is one of the most important issues facing us today. A group of designers and themers have tried to find a way of contributing their own part. How though could a website about desktop customization help to combat global warming?

A mentionable majoritiy of co2 emission is produced by industry. Private households also add significantly to the problem by using multiple fridges, televisions, cars and - last but not least - personal computers. So what can we do to support the movement? With this project, we want to raise awareness for the issue and remind users of nature and its beauty. To remind you of shutting down your computer at night if it’s not in use. To turn your gadgets off instead of having them on standby.

With this voluminous release of skins for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux we want to bring attention to the topic in the community and hope to make you think more about the issue and your own ecological footprint.

We hope this project will reach a lot of people. If you want to help us by writing an article, blog entry or an interview feel free to contact us!
Gaia 2008 has been awarded by several organizations and featured on Behance.

BloodSweatVector was founded in October of 2008 by Jared Nickerson and Brad Mahaffey. They bring together some of the highest regarded vector artists in the world, posting their work. Authors (the artists) posting on this site have been specifically invited to be a part of BSV due to the respect they garner in the vector community. Each entry is from the artists themselves, providing the news directly to you via BSV. I joined them today and would like to invite you to a showcase of great vector artists.

Quiksilver is stoked to team up with DesignByHumans to present the Design a Difference Tee Contest. Quiksilver has a deep artistic heritage in board sport culture. Each season, Quiksilver partners with an aesthetic visionary in the creation of our Foundation Tee Shirt Collection benefiting a range of social, economic and environmental causes. For Fall 2009, the charity is the Tony Hawk Foundation and the artist is you! DesignByHumans and Quiksilver will donate 6% of proceeds from the sale of each t-shirt to the Tony Hawk Foundation which helps fund recreational programs and the creation of public skateboard parks in low-income communities. They just updated with a new, fresh layout, too. So be sure to enter the contest!

The iDesk

The new iDesk offers ease of use for all your Apple© Products in a clean, wireless appearance. Created by the famous furniture designer Paul Bichler who already realized projects for Bentley, Estée Lauder and Bobbi Brown.

Nuance designed a clean, minimal, and light-weight web experience to help showcase his concept, the iDesk. Paul uses his expertise to produce a workspace that accentuates the clean design of Apple’s products while also reducing the clutter and hassles of wires that normally run on the surface of one’s desk.

To realize this project Nuance created 3-Dimensional renders of the iDesk and implemented a fully interactive real-time 3-D engine to help users explore the iDesk. This is all encased in a light, yet efficient Flash interface.

The iDesk is now available on:

Blossom Noir by Jeremy Cole

Blossom Noir is the stunning new lighting piece from Jeremy Cole. This dramatic black gloss design forms part of the Aloe range within the Flora Collection. Blossom Noir is available in the ‘Blossom’, which is the mid-life and full beauty of the flower. Different designs in the Aloe range representing the full lifecycle of the Aloe flower are available in opaque white. The Blossom Noir is available in three size options. Jeremy’s design ethos is all about complex simplicity – simple on the outside, shielding the complexity on the inside. The Aloe range is made from individually handmade porcelain leaves that are geometrically arranged around the light source to act as a diffuser, producing a calming, glowing light.
