How to Look at Art Through Apps – ReadWriteWeb

“Images were first made to conjure up the appearance of something that was absent,” writes John Berger in his seminal publication Ways of Seeing. “Gradually it became evident that an image could outlast what it represented.”

Project Paperclip proposes a way to augment reality. It takes a highly replicable Internet photograph of nature, combining it with a QR code and sound emitted from an iPhone app. It is subtly disconcerting, an ominous prediction of the artificial realities we build with the help of smartphone apps and the Internet.
What is curation? Web 2.0, everybody curates.
This is the first in a series of videos explaining the shifts we’re seeing in the world of content creation. Curation has exploded with the growth of Twitter, Tumblr and now Pinterest. In this video, we wanted to try to get into the heads of some of our favorite curators to understand what makes them tick.

Photography Exhibit Augments Reality With iPhone App

Portuguese Artist Nuno Serrão recently unveiled a unique art exhibit which allows the visitor to experience each image, instead of merely viewing it. Entitled Project Paperclip, the exhibit is the first to use an iPhone app as part of the actual art experience.

Project Paperclip, the first photography exhibition with augmented reality.
Project Paperclip is the first photographic exhibition to use Augmented Reality. The concept of Augmented Reality, utilizes a digital interface to permit the creation of a bridge between our universe and the digital universe, creating a mixed ambience in real time where the differentiation between these two realities is reduced. In this exhibition, this is brought about by using an iPhone, headsets and an application that is available on the Apple app store.
To make full use of this exhibition, visitors that have an iPhone 3 or above need to download Project Paperclip application, at the AppStore. Equipped with a headphones (the better the quality, the more immersive the simulation will be), switch on the App and follow instructions to activate the soundscapes.
The experience is unique each time it is activated as the algorithm utilizes real variables for its processing, such as: the time of day, the level of noise that exists in the room, your voice, the movement and localization of the user, amongst many others.
