Quicken Loan’s Offices in Downtown Detroit
Quicken Loans and its sister companies will occupy four floors, or nearly 250,000 square feet, in their new location. The space was designed and built to encourage creativity, openness, communication and collaboration.
The Quicken Loans culture is reflected in the bright colors, numerous open spaces, low interior walls, and unique innovative design combined with the latest technology tools implemented throughout. Even art produced by a local graffiti artist can be found in the companies’ new daytime home.
“Vibrant colors, open, collaborative work environments, ping pong tables: When you think of creative office space, a mortgage company is probably the last place to come to mind. But these are just the starting points at Quicken Loans’ new downtown Detroit campus.
Graffiti from local artists decorate the walls and floors, razor scooters zip around every corner, kitchens feature popcorn and slushy machines, and bright colors cover every hallway (even scratch-and-sniff wallpaper is used in our space). And since work should always be fun, there are ping pong tables and a replica Cleveland Cavaliers basketball court.”
Quicken Loans has moved 6000 team members to Downtown Detroit since August 2010. The goal? To revitalize Detroit into a vibrant and energetic tech hub.
The company has purchased a total of nine buildings, which each have a different look and feel. But for the purposes of today’s tour, we get to see three – The Madison Building, The Chase Building, and the Compuware Building.
“We pledge to fulfill our commitment to the city. This is an interim step that allows us to begin transforming Detroit into a high-tech hub of business and ingenuity,” said company founder and chairman Dan Gilbert
The Madison building is designed to include both QL offices and an entrepreneurial hub of creative and technology companies.

Fox Nahem
Established in the early 1980s by Joe Nahem and Tom Fox, the New York City firm Fox-Nahem Associates is known for spirited, unpretentious rooms executed in a range of styles and often complementing serious architecture.
Born and raised in New York City, Joe Nahem graduated from Parsons School of Design in New York and Paris where he studied under celebrated designers such as Joe D’Urso and John Saladino. Joe Nahem has been at the helm of the company since the passing of his partner, Tom Fox, in 2003, but their work continues to be a celebration of their partnership.
Recently completed projects include Park Avenue duplexes, New York City townhouses, a Martha’s Vineyard farm house, Hamptons’ beach houses, and so on.
Exuberant mixes of new with vintage and antiques, colors and textures, their work has an edge without being over the top, joining conformability and stylishness in their designs. They often use warm tones – rich wood, plush caramel and soft cream give the space inviting warmth – like coming home to a favorite warm drink on a cold day.
The warm tones are balanced with crisp white walls that keep it feeling fresh and sophisticated.
Compared to a today’s “Hollywood Regency” phase where embellishments and decoration seem almost too commonplace-like, where mixes seem too forced, Fox Nahem’s restraint shows a purpose in the mix, shows a reverence for timeless design.
