Don’t cave in and spend $50 dollars or more on a cheesy store-bought costume. Go the do-it-yourself (DIY) route and you’ll have way more fun being creative and solving design problems.
Temporary Tattoos are an easy and affordable way to build or accessorize your DIY Halloween costume. Check out these six weird costume ideas that all incorporate temporary ink!
1. Evil Clown
Inspire coulrophobia (fear of clowns) with an evil clown costume. Start with regular clown attire, but add sinister makeup and perhaps just a little bit of fake blood dripping out of the corner of your mouth. If you want to be a little less subtle, add a gaping head wound temporary tattoo to your forehead. There’s nothing scarier than a bloodied clown.
2. Vintage Pinup Girl
Break out the red lipstick, peep-toe pumps, and seamed stockings to transform yourself into a 1940s era pinup girl. You can wear a sailor outfit, a blouse and pair of hot pants, or a cute polka dot halter dress. Accessorize this look with sexy cherry temporary tattoos or sailor tattoos for the boys overseas.
3. Classic Cyclops
Use this creepy eyeball tattoo to become a cyclops for Halloween. Apply the tattoo to your forehead. Get a bald cap to cover your hair and some skin-tone pantyhose you can wrap over your eyes. This way your eyes will be masked but you will still be able to see. Impress your friends with a nod to “The Odyssey” by carrying around a few headless, bloody dolls. (In the Odyssey the Cyclops gets mad at Odysseus’ men and eats some of them!)
Math geeks can celebrate their love of numbers by dressing up as Pi for Halloween. Yes this one’s a little conceptual. It involves using number tattoos to map out as much of the sequence of Pi (3.14159265….) as you can fit on your body. Start on your hand, wrap up your arm, spiral around your neck and shoulders and maybe onto your face, and then travel back down to over your legs. The less clothing you wear, the more Pi you can show off!
If you are looking for an excuse to swear a lot on Halloween, then this biker costume is for you. Layer on the black clothing, bandannas, denim, and leather. Remember, no biker costume is complete without a ton of ink. Get a variety of vintage skull tattoos, maybe a dragon or two, a chopper, a tribal arm band, and a mom tattoo. Ed Hardy-inspired tattoos are also very appropriate. Feature the tattoos on your arms, hands, and neck.
6. The United Nations
This is a ridiculous idea, but it just could work! Dress up as the United Nations by covering yourself in temporary flag tattoos representing the nearly 200 UN members. Feel free to cross-reference multiple cultures in your choice of accessories and props. For example, you could wear a traditional Chinese hat, Scottish kilt and Swedish clogs. The cross-cultural possibilities are endless. It will also help to learn how to say “hello” in as many languages as you can.
