UK Shed Of The Year Finalists

Sheds may seem like a humble garden storage solution, but impressive designs across the globe could certainly end this stereotype. This year, to mark the 10th anniversary of the Cuprinol Shed of the Year contest, planners have joined forces with a fan site called Cabin Porn to run a Global category in the contest – and the designs are certainly envy inducing.

A Junkyard Of Classic Cars Located In Rural Georgia

1
Eddie McDaniel, who goes by Fast Eddie, walks through Old Car City, the world’s largest known classic car junkyard, where he occasionally plays piano for visitors Thursday, July 16, 2015, in White, Ga. Over 4,000 classic cars decorate 32 acres of forest which have been turned into a junkyard museum by owner Walter Dean Lewis. The two grew up playing in the cars on the lot which started as a general store selling auto parts in 1931 by Lewis’ parents. Lewis stopped selling parts about six years ago when he realized he could sustain the business more as a museum, charging $15 for visitors just looking, and $25 for photographers. Many of the cars have never moved in over 30 years and in some cases, trees now grow through them, even lifting some off the ground. (Photo by David Goldman/AP Photo)

Highlights of the musical extravaganza have included Dolly Parton, Metallica and Arcade Fire, while Kasabian headlined the Pyramid Stage last night. Campers now have until 6pm to leave the site at Worthy Farm in Pilton, Somerset, while crew and stall holders are given a week to clear their property. Meanwhile, hours before they began to leave, organiser Michael Eavis revealed that the 44-year-old event could have a lifespan of just six more years.

Elephant versus Hippo

Wildlife photographer Rian van Schalkwyk captured the spectacular scene as he watched the animals grazing at a safari park in Namibia. They say a mother will do anything for her child – even if it means putting herself in harm’s way. This fully-grown hippo was flipped several feet into the air as she stood her ground against an aggressive elephant bull, giving her calf time to scamper to safety. Amazingly, the mother emerged relatively unscathed from the attack, apparently suffering nothing worse than a little gash on the side of her body and a rather bruised ego. The scene was captured by wildlife photographer Rian van Schalkwyk, 40, at the Erindi Private Game Reserve in Windhoek, Namibia. (Photos by Rian van Schalkwyk/Barcroft Media) Continue reading »

SHORT CUT by Michael Elmgreen & Ingar Dragset

With a piece in which a white car towing a trailer emerges from a long imaginary journey to the center of the earth out of the floor of the central octagon in Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, Michael Elmgreen & Ingar Dragset make a unique incursion into the daily life of Milan and its history, reinterpreting one of the city’s iconic landmarks.

A metaphor for global tourism, but also a symbol for the precarious nature of today’s world, the installation Short Cut (2003) describes a universe in movement that travels along endless, unpredictable paths towards fanciful destinations. For their first public project in Italy, the two artists also chose to tackle local stereotypes: the car is a run-of-the-mill white Fiat Uno with Naples plates, and on the dash one can see a map of Rimini.

7th Annual Focus on Nature Photo Contest Winners

The Palm Beach Post, and its multimedia site CLIK/HEAR, are honored to present the winners of the 7th Annual Focus on Nature Photo Contest. More than 1,600 entries were received during the contest’s 3-week period. They were judged by educator and award-winning nature photographer John J. Lopinot, and Jennifer Podis, Greg Lovett and Joe Forzano of the Post’s Multimedia Department.

GRAND PRIZE. “Attempted Escape Grassy Waters,” by STEVEN SCHERER. “The image was taken at Grassy Waters Preserve in West Palm Beach, with a Nikon D300 and Nikon 70-300mm lens. There were three baby gators right by the dock, then I saw an adult floating toward them. The adult grabbed a baby, went under water and I started shooting. Suddenly it came up and this was one of the images. Like many things it was just being at the right place at the right time.” Continue reading »

Cause and Effect

unnamed

“Last week, a wall that Teazer, Numskull and Roach had painted in Camperdown, was painted over by someone (owners, real estate agents, council….?) without the artists knowing. This was the response from an unknown person. It made our day. We’re not sure which one we like best…”
