NASA Releases Incredible Photos on Flickr

NASA just joined Flickr Commons, releasing 180 historic photos in three incredible sets; Building NASA, Launch/Takeoff and NASA Center Namesakes. The photos span the US space agency’s 50+ year history. You’ll not only get to see the key figureheads behind NASA, you’ll also see some of the most iconic spacecrafts take flight. See more at My Modern Metropolis.
Space photography by NASA
Here are the few photos taken by NASA, which includes Space photographs also. Space photography has come a long way since the Mercury missions of the early 1960s. The only photo equipment in Colonel John Glenn’s cramped Friendship 7 capsule was a point-and-shoot camera loaded with Kodak 35mm film.

Astronaut Ice Cream
Freeze dried to survive the trip into outer space, then vacuum sealed for freshness, you can now get your own pack of Astronaut Ice Cream, and eat like they do at 300 km above the earth. Surprisingly delicious, this isn’t the same brand of rations used by NASA’s men and women, but prepared in the same way, and no less novel. Available online in Neopolitan only.
Eric Zelinski Redesigns Man and Space
Eric Zelinski had an unusual inspiration to redesign 4 chapters of a classic educational book; Time Life Science Library’s Man and Space. The edition was first printed in 1964 and contained some very basic info-graphics on various space travel themes of the era. Keep in mind that this is pre-Apollo — so some of the items were conceptually unproven, but based upon generally accepted models of that time.
Seen above is “Ways to Go” which presents 3 different ways that NASA was actually considering for getting a man to the surface of the moon and back. Judging from the upstanding rockets seen in diagram #1 and #2, I think #3 is closer to the method that prevailed.

A bit of more general information on the local environment around earth.

Atomic Ghost ‘Astro Bears: American Heroes’
The Atomic Ghost, alias of Brazilian artist Rafael Castilho, has created a humorous photo series titled, ‘Astro Bears: American Heroes.’ The pieces, which feature the combination of photographs of astronauts from the early days of NASA combined with Castilho’s own illustration of a cartoon bear heads, occupy the more lighthearted space within art. ‘Astro Bears: American Heroes” may not be the highest form of artistic creation, but it is creative production none the less, and even if it doesn’t make you question existence, it will at the very least make you chuckle.
50 Mind-Blowing Space Artworks
Space has always fascinated humanity. The concept of an almost infinitely vast and complex universe stirs the deepest emotions in the viewer. From movies, TV shows, science, music, and art, outer space has had an incredible influence on our lives. And whether you’re a NASA scientist, a die hard science fiction fan, or just sitting in a cubicle working, space art can take your breath away.
In this post, we’ve rounded up 50 mind-blowing space images, that challenge and push the boundaries of both art and science. Each image is linked to the artist’s homepage, so you can view the fullsize and download wallpaper packs. If you liked this post, please share it with others. Hopefully one day, these views will be available not just on a computer screen.
HiRISE Mars Images from 300KM

The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter has been quietly orbiting Mars for the last two years taking stunning hi-res photographs. This amazing series of Mars photographs has been collected by NASA and shared with the press, giving an up-close-and-personal perspective on the breathtaking Martian landscape. More at TheCoolist.
“FLY Everywhere I Go” Campaign

Pittsburgh based Frequently Fly Clothing just recently released photos from a campaign they’re launching called “FLY Everywhere I Go.” The photos were shot by Jordan Beckham. It’s primarily a guy walking around in a NASA spacesuit, the photos feature the astronaut in everyday life situations (i.e. – on a public bus, on a subway, at a Taco Bell, at a festival, etc.) You can check out more of the campaign at here.
Space Blog for Designers: wanderingspace.net

Anyone can go to the official NASA website to see the most recent images returning from the various missions in operation. Wanderingspace collects images not only from official press releases, but also monitors the freelance imaging community that puts the time and love into making composites that NASA doesn’t. These are among some of the very best images available of our local cosmic neighborhood and yet many get barely any public exposure.
