Night is the time of the day when cities become a different place, with new dynamics and routines.

New York Nights is a new photographic book from by James and Karla Murray, the creative team that also brought you Store Front—The Disappearing Face of New York.

This new book explores many of the New York businesses that are alive and kicking during nighttime hours. Hayon Studio has designed the new restaurant – Le Sergent Recruteur – which lives by the motto ‘live, eat and rest’ has just opened its Hayon doors in the heart of Paris – 41, rue Saint-Louis en l’Ile / 75004- with the talented chef Antonin Bonnet at the helm in the kitchen.

About 32 kilometers northeast of Emmen is Fort Bourtange, a star fort in the village of Bourtange, Groningen, Netherlands. This uniquely shaped fort was built during the Eighty Years War (1568-1648) to control the only road connecting Germany and the city of Groningen which was occupied by the Spaniards at the time.

Colonie restaurant, recently opened in Brooklyn Heights, is a fantastic example of a rehabilitated space that joins creativity and vision to materials that once had a life as something else entirely, and work it into something brand new and beautiful to look at.

Drawing inspiration from the history and beauty of the surrounding historic neighborhoods, Colonie strives to support the New York food community by using as many local purveyors as possible, while providing the locals and neighbors with a comfortable, inviting spot to drink and dine. Sustainability has become ”the” buzzword in the design world over the past few years.

With an accessible and welcoming environment amid exposed brick, reclaimed wood, steel casement windows, and industrial lighting, a burst of green serves as the dynamic centerpiece of Colonie. A repurposed steel beam that the owners found on the roof of the building now serves as a chandelier above the dining área.

Drawing inspiration from the history and beauty of the surrounding historic neighborhoods, Colonie strives to support the New York food community by using as many local purveyors as possible, while providing the locals and neighbors with a comfortable, inviting spot to drink and dine. The ”living wall” (as the owners refer to it) is a vertical garden, lush and wild, complete with edible herbs.  It truly brings an extra ”something” to the space and this green burst of life has the passersby retracing their steps to have another peek inside.

The overall design of COLONIE is meant to evoke the experience of one large shared family meal, an urban barn-house if you will.

We love it when art collectors open their places up to the public, and we don’t even care whether it’s a philanthropic gesture or just a way to pay for the stuff they keep buying. Whatever the motive, Joe Public now has the opportunity to holiday among the collection of Olivier Massart and his wife Patricia at Domaine des Andéols in the Luberon, France – the second dose of arty French accommodation we’ve dished up today, we really are spoiling you.

It’s difficult to say exactly what will greet guests when they arrive at La Monnaie Art and Spa Hotel in La Rochelle, France, as the art part changes regularly thanks to a collaboration with a local gallery. What we can say for certain is that the hotel, a member of the Design Hotels fold, will be a visually entertaining treat for the eyes while the spa facilities treat the body.
