Photo of the Day: The Brazilian Bus Magnate Who’s Buying Up All the World’s Vinyl Records

1

Paul Mawhinney, a former music-store owner in Pittsburgh, spent more than 40 years amassing a collection of some three million LPs and 45s, many of them bargain-bin rejects that had been thoroughly forgotten. The world’s indifference, he believed, made even the most neglected records precious: music that hadn’t been transferred to digital files would vanish forever unless someone bought his collection and preserved it. Brazilian Designer Trains Murder Convicts to Knit for High-Fashion Brand

The Arisvaldo de Campos Pires, a high security prison in Juiz de Fora, 160km north of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, is unlike similar structures anywhere else in the world.

In here, inmates sentenced for such severe crimes as robbery and murder are now knitting high-fashion clothes for Brazilian fashion designer Raquel Guimaraes, in exchange for 75% of national minimum wage and reduced sentences; they get a day cut from their sentence for every three days knitting. It all started in 2009, when Guimaraes trained prisoners in drawing and designing, as well as in high-quality knitting. At the time, she was looking for knitters for her brand Doiselles.

The brand is a globally recognised name and exports to stores in the US, France and Japan, according to the Mail Online. The products are also sold across Brazil. Continue reading »

Huge Brazilian Plant Growing in Dorset has 11ft-Wide Leaves

Huge Brazilian Plant Growing in Dorset has 11ft-Wide Leaves

This monster leaf has shot into the record books because it has an incredible 11ft diameter.

Grown at Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens, the Gunnera Manicata leaf is big enough for a whole family to shelter under. The plant, that is native to Brazil, has been growing at the gardens for the last 30 years but its leaves this year are three feet longer than usual.

It is believed the wet summer is responsible for the booming of the bog-loving behemoth. Curator Stephen Griffith believes his leaves are the largest in Britain and the bounty is a bonus after last winter’s cold weather caused serious harm to several plants.

The leaves of the plant – which is also known as a Giant Rhubarb – are usually about 8ft wide. Mr Griffith said visitors to the sheltered gardens, that enjoys its own micro-climate, have been stunned by the size of the leaf.

He said: “This plant comes from Brazil and lives in bogs so it has enjoyed the wet conditions this year.

“People are amazed and I’ve even seen some visitors sheltering under the leaves when it has been been raining.” (BNPS.co.uk)
