Three days after the huge nuclear disaster at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in northern Ukraine on April 26, 1986, the Soviets mandated that everyone living within 30-kilometers of the plant evacuate. People were told they’d only be gone for a few days, and packed as such.
