A small, likely juvenile, bobcat is perched on a power pole in a residential neighborhood of Victorville California. Victorville Animal Control and the California Department of Fish and Game were alerted but they do not attempt to trap or contain wild animals unless they present a clear, imminent danger. Award-Winning Shots From The 2012 Underwater Photo Contest
Intrepid photographers submitted over 700 underwater images for the 2012 Underwater Photography Contest and an adorable red sea slug grinning for the camera was awarded the contest’s star. The annual contest, put on by the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine & Atmospheric Science, showcases the colorful creatures typically beneath reach and awards prizes in three categories: macro, fish or marine animal portrait, and wide angle.

NOAA today released this 2008 photo of an adult male ribbon seal in the Bering Sea. Scientists from Russia and the United States have announced that they will use high resolution photography and thermal sensors in an ambitious project to count ice seals in the Bering Sea, which the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has recommended for listing as a threatened species due to climate warming. The broken hull of the Rena is tossed by heavy sea swells on Astrolabe reef near Tauranga, New Zealand, where it has been lodged since October. Maritime New Zealand on Thursday charged the owners of the Rena, Daina Shipping with discharging harmful substances from the vessel. 7th Annual Focus on Nature Photo Contest Winners
The Palm Beach Post, and its multimedia site CLIK/HEAR, are honored to present the winners of the 7th Annual Focus on Nature Photo Contest. More than 1,600 entries were received during the contest’s 3-week period. They were judged by educator and award-winning nature photographer John J. Lopinot, and Jennifer Podis, Greg Lovett and Joe Forzano of the Post’s Multimedia Department.
GRAND PRIZE. “Attempted Escape Grassy Waters,” by STEVEN SCHERER. “The image was taken at Grassy Waters Preserve in West Palm Beach, with a Nikon D300 and Nikon 70-300mm lens. There were three baby gators right by the dock, then I saw an adult floating toward them. The adult grabbed a baby, went under water and I started shooting.
