Spitting Ink

Spitting Ink follows eight spoken word artists as they traverse the streets, perform in situ, and talk about their motivation to write.

In the United States, a poetry subculture has grown up around a group of young, spoken-word artists. Although the work they produce is widely diverse, it tends to have a strong affinity with contemporary social reality and urban culture. The poets’ work is not aimed at a mass audience, and they perform in small clubs. Each of them has found his or her own way to focus the power of the spoken word. Spitting Ink is a portrait of some of these artists. Interviews and live performances are interspersed with images of the streets of New York — not the orderly, well-to-do neighborhoods, but their lively and sometimes dilapidated backstreet counterparts, with their graffiti-covered walls, subway trains, and bars. Spoken-word artist Mike Ladd speaks about this poetry’s origins and background (its roots in gospel and other forms) and about how it reached a turning point with the arrival of rap. Beau Sia creates poetry both to impress the girls and to rebut prejudices about his Asiatic roots; Celena Glenn only writes once a year, when her head is full to overflowing and dozens of poems suddenly stream out.

Photo of the Day: How to Become a TV Star

This cat was left clinging on to a television aerial 20ft in the air for three hours after falling off a roof. Peter Smith, 67, from Long Stratton, Norfolk, was woken by the sound of loud meowing and saw the cat when he opened his curtains. “My wife and I could hear this meowing that went on and on, so I looked out the window and was shocked to see a cat stuck on the aerial,” he said. “It was next-door’s cat and I think it must have been chasing a bird across the roof and fallen off. It was very scared and clinging on for dear life as the aerial is quite flimsy.” Mr Smith’s neighbour used a large ladder to reach his cat and the poor pet was brought down. “It was very shaken after the ordeal,” added Mr Smith. 3D Hand-made Models of Mountain Reliefs

Eduard Imhof (1895-1986) was professor of cartography at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich from 1925 – 1965. His fame far beyond the Institute of Technology was based on his school maps and atlases. In 1995 it was 100 years since his birthday. On this occasion several exhibitions celebrated his life and work, among others in Zurich, Bern, Bad Ragaz, Küsnacht/ZH, Barcelona, Karlsruhe and Berlin. The last such exhibition took place in summer 1997 in the Graphische Sammlung of the ETH. There it was possible to show a large number of maps and pictures in the original. At the conclusion of the exhibition Imhof’s family bequested his original works to the ETH-Bibliothek Zurich. Mrs. Viola Imhof, the widow of Eduard Imhof, being very much attached to his work, had a major part in making it accessible to the public.

Eduard Imhof not only cartographed and drew the mountains, but also modeled them. The three relief models he made are on permanent display at the Swiss Alpine Museum in Bern, in the Naturwissenschaftlichen Sammlungen of the city of Winterthur and in the ETH-Hönggerberg (HIL-Gebäude).
