Törmänen was thrilled to meet a school of inquisitive European perch on her annual snorkel in Honkalampi lake. In the previous three years she had found only dead fish. She framed the fish flying through clouds of pink-tinged algae. Although it created a beautiful scene, excessive algal growth, a result of the changing climate and warming waters, can cause problems for aquatic wildlife as it uses up oxygen and blocks out sunlight. Waverley Abbey yew, Farnham, Surrey
A truly spectacular yew, with roots that grow into and around the ruins of Waverley Abbey – the first monastery founded in Britain 900 years ago by the reforming Cistercian religious order. After the dissolution of the monasteries in 1536, the abbey was dismantled. It is a beautiful tree with roots that sprawl out above ground before plunging into the earth. Its multi-stemmed form is dotted with holes, crevices and areas of decay that provide a habitat for other species. Age: The exact age is unknown but it can not be more than 480 years old.
