The Independent Photographer has just released the winners of its Color Photography Contest, which took place in June 2022. Many images from more than 30 different countries have been rewieved and 10 Winners and Finalists. The Color Photography Award aimed to discover and bring exposure to the best contemporary artists working across all photographic fields.

Born in Ethiopia in 1974, Aïda Muluneh left the country at a young age and spent an itinerant childhood between Yemen and England. After several years in a boarding school in Cyprus, she finally settled in Canada in 1985. In 2000, she graduated with a degree from the Communication Department with a major in Film from Howard University in Washington D.C. Wayne Quilliam’s Silent Strength, a photograph of Aurukun man Eric Yunkaporta, has won the 2022 national photographic portrait prize. Quilliam says the capture of Yunkaporta in ceremonial headwear is akin to a trickle of water merging into a small stream, then into the ocean.

As Melbourne struggles through many days of restrictions, with limited options to play and learn for the kids, four-year-old astronaut Mia puts on her homemade space suit and helmet and goes on exploration missions in the familiar neighbourhood, using her imagination to turn the mundane world around her into an exciting adventure. This photograph is one of the memories from our daily walks, one of the stories we found. The lockdowns have ended. We’ll outgrow the costume.
