Unlikely Friendships
Don’t forget to check a previous one – Animal Instinct: The World’s Most Unlikely Friendships.
An orphaned rhesus monkey and white dove that seemed to have lost its mate forged a special bond at the Neilingding Island-Futian National Nature Reserve in China. The monkey was born on the island but had strayed from its mother. Luckily, it was taken in by work staff in the protection center and became friends with the pigeon that had lingered there after possibly losing its mate. Ken Hong Leung has been acclaimed since 1952 for his brilliant artistic style. A master of oil on canvas, he achieves a haunting quality in his works that absorbs the viewer’s emotions like an irresistible melody. His brush, like a wand, seems to weave a sense of enchantment. Humpback Whale Close Encounter Off California Coast
Bill Bouton, a retired high school biology teacher, was on an unsuccessful outing to photograph birds in San Luis Obispo, California, when he happened upon a breathtaking sight beneath the skyline: a pod of humpback whales feeding in shallow water.
The 69-year-old captured one of the enormous mammals breaching the surface while feeding on a “bait ball,” a dense mass of sardines that forms to ward off predators. But the defense mechanism just seemed to be attracting more hungry creatures, Bouton said, as hundreds of pelicans and seagulls were diving in the water and flying up again. Continue reading »

Coca-Cola Zero to Help Discover a Secret Agent in You
Coca-Cola is to support the long-awaited release of the 23rd installment of the James Bond series, Skyfall, which is to hit the screens on the 26th of October in the UK.
The soft-drink company will welcome the new movie in the legendary series with a massive campaign, which will include promotion adverts, social media activation and on-pack promotion. The new limited-edition PET Coca-Cola Zero bottles, aliminium cans and bottles will feature the iconic Bond ‘gun barrel’ design, highlighting the brand’s ties with the upcoming film directed by Sam Mendes and starring Daniel Craig. London Zoo Staff Conduct Their Annual Weigh In For the Animals
Zookeeper Grant Kother, at ZSL London Zoo, weighs and measures a giant tortoise during the zoo’s annual weigh-in on August 22, 2012 in London, England. The height and mass of every animal in the Zoo, of which there are over 16,000, needs to be recorded. The measurements are collated in the Zoological Information Management System, from which zoologists can use the data to compare information on thousands of endangered species. New Holland is a remarkable landmark in St Petersburg, Russia, contemporary to the city, which was created in the 18 century by russian tzar Peter the Great as the main gate to Europe. From the moment of its founding, New Holland has been under naval control and used for maintenance of the Russian fleet. At the turn of the twenty-first century, the island has been given over to the city, launching a new chapter in its history.

Nemo 33: World’s Deepest Swimming Pool
Located in Brussels, Belgium, the ‘Nemo 33’ is a diving center that has the world’s deepest swimming pool. Designed by Belgian diving expert John Beernaerts, the pool is 108-feet deep (34.5-meters deep), and contains 2.5 million liters of non-chlorinated, high-filtered spring water that’s kept at a temperature of 86-degrees Fahrenheit (30-degrees Celsius). Anthropocene Mapping: The Human Influence On Earth
Defined according to Wikipedia it is “a recent and informal geologic chronological term that serves to mark the evidence and extent of human activities that have had a significant global impact on the Earth’s ecosystems. The term was coined by ecologist Eugene Stoermer but has been widely popularized by the Nobel Prize-winning atmospheric chemist Paul Crutzen.”

Bruce Campbell’s Boeing 727 Home Project
Bruce Campbell doesn’t just love planes, he lives inside of one. After purchasing a a Boeing 727-200 for $100,000, he placed it in his backyard, otherwise known as the middle of the woods in Oregon. Campbell’s startup costs were actually quite considerable. He paid $17,000 to move the plane from an airport to a staging site, $20,000 to rent the staging site for four months, $21,600 to remove the wings and tail, and $25,000 to finally move it to his house. Einstein: The World’s Smallest Horse
The World’s Smallest Horse according to Guinness World Records is Thumbelina from Missouri, but another tiny horse named Einstein may take her place when he turns 4, which is the minimum age required for the record. Einstein is from New Hampshire and unlike Thumbelina, he doesn’t have any dwarvish features, he has the same proportions as any other horse – he’s just much much smaller.
Einstein is only 35 cm tall (14 inches) and weighs 2.7 kg (6lb). Thumbelina is 44.5 cm (17.5 in) tall, so even if Eisntein grows a little, the chances of he becoming the official smallest horse in the world are quite high. He was born in April 2010, so he still needs to wait for almost 2 years until he becomes eligible for the title. Continue reading »
