In the Russian village of Kamarchaga, in the Siberian taiga, Russian pensioner Olga Kostina has used 30,000 plastic bottle caps to adorn her home with colorful patterns and images – making it somewhat of a local landmark. Over many years, in the isolated rural town situated just in the perimeter of the taiga’s forest, Olga Kostina collected the lids and once she felt there was enough she created detailed murals across the walls of her home with images of traditional macrame motifs and various creatures living in the neighboring woodland. Vladimir Franz – Completely Tattooed Czech Presidential Candidate
Vladimir Franz, a university teacher, painter and composer, announced that he is planning to run for President in the Czech Republic’s 2013 elections, Prague Daily Monitor reports. Franz stands out from other candidates — he has tattoos that cover his entire face and body, as well as a variety of piercings and a dye that makes his hair blue. Before he can compete in the elections, Franz must collect 50,000 signatures. Betting sites are not giving him good odds at present, but he is placing higher than some candidates. Continue reading »

Michael Mathias Prechtl (April 26, 1926, Amberg – March 19, 2003, Nuremberg) was a German artist, illustrator and cartoonist. He served as a soldier on the Eastern Front during World War II and spent 1945-49 as a prisoner of war in the Soviet Union.
He is well known for illustrating German editions of literary classics such as works by E.T.A. Hoffmann, Thomas More, Dante, Goethe, Benvenuto Cellini, and the letters of Mozart. He received more publicity for the numerous front page illustrations he made for Der Spiegel in the 1980s. Continue reading »
