Winners Of The 2017 National Geographic Travel Photographer Of The Year
A photograph of an erupting volcano hit by a bolt of lightning has earned Sergio Tapiro Velasco of Mexico the prestigious title of 2017 National Geographic Travel Photographer of the Year. Velasco will receive a 10-day trip for two to the Galápagos Archipelago with National Geographic Expeditions, as well as a $2500 prize. Velasco’s incredible photo was selected from over 15,000 entries from participants in more than 30 countries.

Powerful eruption of Colima Volcano in Mexico on December 13th, 2015. That night, the weather was dry and cold, friction of ash particles generated a big lightning of about 600 meters that connected ash and volcano, and illuminated most of the dark scene. On last part of 2015, this volcano showed a lot of eruptive activity with ash explosions that raised 2-3 km above the crater. Most of night explosions produced incandescent rock falls and lightning not bigger than 100 meters in average. Freezing Temperatures Transform Lighthouse Into Icy Giant
A winter chill has descended upon Lake Michigan, giving the St. Joseph lighthouse an otherworldly appearance, as ice clings to every inch of its surface. Photographer Joshua Nowicki and the Great Lakes Drone Company each braved the weather to get some incredible footage of the icy lighthouse. From high altitude, even the most familiar coastlines take on an entirely new dimension. Combine that bird’s-eye-view with a pulsing swell, and you can see how points and bays manipulate the ocean’s energy, bending waves to perfection. It’s that enlightening perspective that first drew Woody Woodworth toward aerial photography. Photographer Captures Remarkable Images Of Largest Cave In The World
Using standard DSLR cameras and a GoPro HERO4 attached to a camera drone, Ryan Deboodt has captured images of one of the world’s best kept secrets. Hang Son Soong, located in Vietnam, is the largest known cave in the world. The largest chamber in the cave is more than 3.1 miles long, 490 feet wide, and 660 feet high with stalagmites that reach up to 230 feet tall. Continue reading »
