Wildlife Photographer Of The Year 2015: First Glimpse Of Finalists’ Images
Wrestling Komodo dragons, a shark-repellent surfboard and a concerned gorilla are among the images captured on camera by finalists in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2015 competition. The competition attracted over 42,000 entries from both professionals and amateurs from 96 countries.
The winning images will be announced on 13 October, and an exhibition of the 100 shortlisted and winning images opens on 16 October at the Natural History Museum in London. These 100 images will also be part of an international tour spanning six continents, allowing millions of people to marvel at the beauty and variety of the natural world.
IBTimesUK presents a first look at ten of the finalists. A full gallery of winners will be published as soon as they are announced.

The Snow Town Theme Park Lets Children In Thailand Experience Snow For First Time
Ice sculptures, sledging and snowball fights – the last activities you would normally associate with Thailand. But children in Bangkok have been treated to a winter wonderland theme park, and for some this is the first time they have ever seen snow. Youngsters’ faces lit up as they got to experience the sub-zero magical landscape at the Snow Town which opened this month. The attraction is located on the fifth floor of Gateway Ekamai shopping complex and offers guests an opportunity to build snowmen and make snow angels. The artificial snow is said to be 30-40cm thick so visitors can book lessons in activities such as skiing and snowboarding or enjoy a good old-fashioned snowball fight.

The world’s first 3D printed car – the Stratti – was built in just 45 hours at the International Manufacturing Technology Show which took place between September 8 – 13, 2014. The Strati, which is Italian for layers, has a chassis body made of one solid piece and has a top speed of 40mph. The tyres, seats, wheels, battery, wiring, suspension, electric motor and window shield of the revolutionary vehicle were made using conventional methods.

World’s First “Liliger” Born in US

A private zoo in Oklahoma celebrated the birth of what they call the world’s first male liliger cub. A liliger is the offspring of a male lion and a ligress. The adorable cub and his little sister make up American second litter of the rare hybrid animal. Their parents are Simba, the lion, and Akara, female liger gave birth to 3.5 pound, 11.25 inch long cubs on May 31st at the GW Interactive Zoo in Wynnewood, Oklahoma. Zoo president Joe Schreibvogel and his team of researchers say they are studying the DNA and genetics of the animals to educate the public about crossbred animals. Continue reading »

Those who have been waiting with bated breath for the results of Pornhub’s SFW advertising contest were assuaged today with the unveiling of 15 finalists. And there’s quite the smattering of innuendo and suggestion in this batch, featuring a few videos, some clever image and word plays, and some that almost literally spell it out.

Inuits from Remote Russia Get Used to being Photographed for the Very First Time
Braving temperatures of -45f to visit a place that is literally located at the end of the earth, Sasha Leahovcenco photographed people who have never had their picture taken before.
Trudging through snow drifts and blizzards, across the deep tundra of the northern Russian region of Chukotka, Leahovcenco traveled to meet a small nomadic tribe of reindeer herders – disconnected from the modern world where the way of life has barely changed for thousands of years. Bringing along a digital printer to the region where it the record high is barely above 90f, Leahovcenco photographed the men, women and children of the hardy native people there – and then to their delight showed them pictures of themselves for the first time in their lives. China’s ‘Jade Rabbit’ Rover Lands on Moon – First Photos
China landed an unmanned rover on the moon, making the Asian nation the third country after the US and the Soviet Union to touch down a spacecraft on the lunar surface.
The probe, carrying a rover dubbed Jade Rabbit that will survey the moon’s geology and natural resources, landed at about 9 pm Beijing on Saturday, the Xinhua News Agency said. China’s achievement comes 47 years after the Soviet Union performed a soft landing of its Luna 9 spacecraft on the moon.
The launch is part of the Asian nation’s growing space exploration ambitions, an effort which has seen the country spend billions of dollars even as other nations cut back. For its next step, China wants to land a lunar rover and return it to Earth in 2017, according to Xinhua. Continue reading »

The First In-Car Hostel in Moscow
Skoda Fabia, a car advertised for the most spacious cabin in its category, was transformed into a real hostel: with a comfortable double-bed, pillows, free wi-fi, and everything needed for a comfortable stay. Yes, it had a bathroom next to the car just in case. The hostel was placed at «Izmaiolovo Park» , one of the most pleasant parks in the city to provide a great view for the guests.
The project was created by the advertising agency Proximity Russia (BBDO Russia Group), in a partnership with the acommodation website Tripping.com: every time someone was searching for a place to stay in Moscow, surprisingly, the Skoda Hostel appeared in the results, and users could book it online and spend one night there. The only payment accepted were likes, tweets and shares.
Guests could also take the car for a ride around the city, so each booking became a full scale test drive. The hostel was fully booked, and had great feedback from its guests. Continue reading »

World’s First Lab-Grown Burger Tested in London
A burger made from cultured beef, which has been developed by Professor Mark Post of Maastricht University in the Netherlands (pictured) is shown to the media during a press conference on August 5, 2013 in London, England. The in-vitro burger, cultured from cattle stem cells, the first example of what its creator says could provide an answer to global food shortages and help combat climate change, was fried in a pan and tasted by two volunteers. The burger is the result of years of research by Dutch scientist Mark Post, a vascular biologist at the University of Maastricht, who is working to show how meat grown in petri dishes might one day be a true alternative to meat from livestock.The meat in the burger has been made by knitting together around 20,000 strands of protein that has been cultured from cattle stem cells in Post’s lab.
PETA, the animal rights organization has already voiced its support for the lab-meat initiative. “Instead of the millions and billions of animals being slaughtered now, we could just clone a few cells to make burgers or chops,” said Ingrid Newkirk, PETA president and co-founder, in a statement. Post said his method would require only a stem cell contribution from animals, which could then be used to create 20,000 tons of cultured beef.

On Tuesday July 30th FEZ will present their first collection of leather bags in Amsterdam. Witzenhausen gallery is the place where FEZ will launch its first one hundred leather bags.
FEZ, a new brand in which art and craftsmanship come together, is named after the place where the leather comes from. FEZ combines the authenticity of Morocco with art from Amsterdam. This unique concept is reinforced by its exclusivity; each bag has a serial number. FEZ has brought two worlds together: traditional leather processing from Morocco and the creative influences of Amsterdam. Every year, a different artist from Amsterdam will make the lining.
