Photographer Nei Valente Creates An Urban Photo Series Of The NYC Newsstands

1

Nei Valente is a 27 year old Brazilian designer and street photographer. He is currently living in NYC and working at Brand Union. His latest series, “NYC newsstand”, tries to portray the current reality of the classic New York newsstands and the characters that live in and through them to create the debate about their future in the digital era. The series dialogues with the 1994 Moyra Davey series “Newsstands” that shows a completely different reality and aesthetic. Nei finds that the interesting thing about having a lot of portraits in the same theme is that you can compare and analyze how are they adapting to this new world and observe that while some keep the magazines and newspapers in front, others are giving priority to candies, snacks and souvenirs. Royal Society Photo Contest Winners Capture Breathtaking Details Of Our Rapidly Changing World

From a swirling dance of mating mayflies to a lone clownfish swimming amongst a field of bone-white sea anemones, the top photos chosen for the Royal Society Publishing’s second annual nature photography contest showcase small but significant moments in a rapidly-changing world. While these images might not seem earth-shattering, their subtle subjects inspire new ways of looking at the natural world.

Special commendation. “Butterflies and caiman” by Mark Cowan.
1

Colourful butterflies gather on the head of this caiman to collect salt – an important mineral for their survival. This photo was taken while on a scientific expedition to the Amazon to study reptile and amphibian diversity. The expedition was led by researchers from the Herpetology Division at the University of Michigan and included participants from Peru and Australia. A number of minerals are a scarce resource throughout Amazonia and so this behaviour allows these invertebrates access to salt, much like the clay licks that are used by a variety of vertebrates. This particular phenomenon where butterflies and bees congregate on the heads and around the eyes of caimans and turtles has been documented before but what is unique here is the simultaneous number of butterfly species and the way in which each species is associated with its own kind. This Powerful Photo Series Inspired By Brock Turner Will Make You Think

1

Brock Turner was sentenced to six months in June of 2016 for sexual assault. But only three months later he was released. In today’s society, sexual violence is dismissed as quickly as its perpetrators. It’s no wonder assaults go severely underreported. How can statements like “It was only 20 minutes of action” lead to so much inaction? We believe justice can’t be served until the sentence matches the severity of the crime.

Yana Mazurkevich, a 20-year-old student at Ithaca College in New York, decided to create a photo series about Brock’s release and its message is shockingly powerful. Continue reading »

Neringa Rekasiute’s “We. Women” Photo Project Places Women In the Throes Of A Major Fear — And Is An Ode To Raw Self-Love

1

What is a beautiful woman? Our media is full of images, attempting to construct what a perfect woman should look like. Sexualisation and standartisation of a female body in the media have direct negative consequences in the society. Objectivisation of body encourages the society to focus on physical appearance of women instead of embracing their personality and inner feelings. As a consequence, about half of women are dissatisfied with their bodies, which leads to a number of psychological and health problems. Continue reading »
