In 1978, Janet Delaney moved to San Francisco’s South of Market (SoMa) district because the location was central and the rent was cheap. She was a student at the San Francisco Art Institute at the time. Delaney began taking photographs with a view camera on the weekends. A couple of space colony summer studies were conducted at NASA Ames in the 1970s. Colonies housing about 10,000 people were designed. A number of artistic renderings of the concepts were made.
