This place in the Primorsky region of Russia could be perfect for making a post-apocalyptic movie – it’s a creepy labyrinth of massive tunnels dug out in the sea-cliff that had to shelter submarines of the Pacific Fleet in case of a nucler war. However, when the construction was almost finished, the project was cancelled. Continue reading »

The people of Milan awoke to find something a little strange yesterday morning.
Just off of Via dei Mercanti, near the heart of the old city, a submarine had apparently pushed its way through the paving stones and damaged a nearby car. The road’s shattered surface lay piled up around, with baffled firefighters looking on. Meanwhile, sailors clambered down from the lost submarine’s tower to meet emergency crews at the scene.
In case you haven’t guessed already, it was, of course, an ambitious publicity stunt. Workers for Europ Assistance IT, an insurance group based in Italy, had come to the street early in the morning to construct the fake submarine.
A worker polishes the surface of an unfinished miniature submarine at a workshop of Zhang Wuyi, a local farmer who is interested in scientific inventions, in Qingling village, on the outskirts of Wuhan, capital of central China’s Hubei province. Zhang has successfully tested his self-made miniature submarine “Shuguang Hao”, which is 12 feet long, 6 feet high, has a maximum diving depth of 65 feet, can travel at a speed of 20 km per hour for 10 hours underwater and is shaped as a dolphin. “I hope to sell my submarine as a civil product with the price of about 100,000 yuan ($15,670) after safety tests, and a merchant has decided to order one in this month”, Zhang said. They are especially known to be used by Colombian drug cartel members to export cocaine from Colombia to Mexico, which is often then transported overland to the United States.
