String Prototype: Jungle Gym Cube Helps to Climb and Explore

1

A group of designers has created a contender for the world’s best jungle gym – a giant inflatable bubble which has endless lengths of rope inside. The unusual project, called String Prototype, has lengths of rope and cables threaded inside the bubble that can take the weight of a person, so users can climb around and explore. The cube’s designers are a Croatian and Austrian collective, Numen, founded by Sven Jonke, Christoph Katzler and Nikola Radeljkovic, who specialize in large-scale interactive projects. When the inflatable cube deflates the ropes get loose and lay on the ground, which means it can be easily packed away. Continue reading »

Animal Rights Activists Intercept Truck Carrying 350 Cats

1
A truck load of around 350 cats destined to be taken to a meat processing factory has been intercepted by animal rights activists in the Putuo district of Shanghai on Wednesday. The cats were mostly strays from around Shanghai city but also included stolen pet cats with some of the animals still wearing collars and tags around their necks. The vehicle was reportedly headed to Guangzhou in South China to a ‘fake meat’ factory where the cat meat would have been treated and sold as pork/lamb. However, before it was able to leave activists stopped the truck and rang the police. The driver was detained on the grounds he had no livestock license for transportation. Lynda Barry Cartoon Art

Famed cartoonist Lynda Barry is currently showing her work from past 35 years at Adam Baumgold Gallery in the exhibition: Lynda Barry, Everything: Part I. The exhibition includes work from her seminal books as well as works that were published in Raw, The Village Voice, Esquire, Newsweek and The New York Times, among others.

Central to all her many bodies of work is Barry’s energetic line and her boisterous sense of humor. In some of her earliest works, for example, a cactus tries to seduce a woman saying, “Lola, can we be sure of anything in this crazy world? All I know are your eyes tonight and this wild beating of my heart.” For Barry, drawing and storytelling are integrated activities.

International Origami Exhibition: Showcasing a Broad Spectrum of Possibilities

Surface to Structure: Folded Forms is an exhibition of origami artwork that brings together the work of 88 artists spanning five continents to the The Cooper Union in Manhattan. The 134 works in the show encapsulate a broad spectrum of origami’s possibilities, both artistic and scientific, and push the perceptions of this art form beyond its traditional boundaries.

Surface to Structure marks the 55th anniversary of the very first origami exhibition held in the United States, which was also housed within The Cooper Union. The historic works of that seminal exhibition served as a foundation for the contemporary origami of today, which has progressed into a far greater range and complexity of styles, techniques, and genres.

Rare Photos of Angola’s Tribal People

1
Photographer Eric Lafforgue travelled to Angola and met some of the fascinating tribal peoples living there.

Men, by contrast, leave jewellery and elaborate hairstyles to the women, instead choosing to wear a simple loin cloth paired with a dagger or, in some cases, old 1990s football jerseys. The jerseys are a symbol of changing times in Angola; a country where huge oil wealth is concentrated in the hands of a privileged few while the rest of the country struggles to come to terms with the aftermath of the Angolan Civil War – a conflict that lasted for more than 30 years and left the countryside littered with landmines.
