(NO)WHERE (NOW)HERE – Interactive Dresses by Ying Gao
2 interactive dresses, Super organza, photoluminescent thread, PVDF, electronic devices.
The project was inspired by the essay entitled “Esthétique de la disparition” (The aesthetic of disappearance), by Paul Virilio (1979).
“Absence often occurs at breakfast time – the tea cup dropped, then spilled on the table being one of its most common consequences. Absence lasts but a few seconds, its beginning and end are sudden. However closed to outside impressions, the senses are awake. The return is as immediate as the departure, the suspended word or movement is picked up where it was left off as conscious time automatically reconstructs itself, thus becoming continuous and free of any apparent interruption.”
The series comprising two (2) dresses, made of photoluminescent thread and imbedded eye tracking technology, is activated by spectators’ gaze. A photograph is said to be “spoiled” by blinking eyes – here however, the concept of presence and of disappearance are questioned, as the experience of chiaroscuro (clarity/obscurity) is achieved through an unfixed gaze. Head in the Clouds by Studio Klimonski Chang Architects
Head in the Clouds structure’s armature is made from 1.5″ aluminum tubes that use less material and are easier to transport than more traditional materials such as wood. All the materials are recyclable. Klimoski and Chang worked with schools and local organizations, including New York Road Runners and NYCRUNS, to collect the 53,780 milk jugs and water bottles needed to create Head in the Clouds. The jugs were used to create 120 “pillows” that give the cloud its bumpy, organic shape. The bottles, accentuated with organic food coloring and water, create the interior’s blue hue. Silicone Pens Give You the Maintenance-Free Lawn You’ve Always Wanted
If you love the look of plants on your desk, but have a nasty habit of killing them through neglect, consider this faux greenery as an alternative. What look like tall blades of grass are actually unfortunately-named Pooleaf pens with long wisps of silicone coming off the end.
They’re just $5 each, which isn’t too shabby, until you realize you’ll actually have to spend well over $100 to fill a pot to recreate the beautiful lawn effect. On the plus side, it will be incredibly obvious if someone steals one of your pens. [via Gizmodo] Continue reading »

Free Dive Hunters
Eyeconic Images is the partnership of DJ Struntz and Logan Mock-Bunting, two internationally renowned photographers with a passion for story-telling, image-making and the ocean.
Spearfishing is a type of hunting done with underwater guns, harpoons and strong line. Freediving is a type of breath-hold diving in which divers descend for the duration of one breath, without any SCUBA tanks or any breathing apparatus. The best freedivers can hold their breath for over five minutes and go deeper than 100 feet. The combination of both these skills makes a high adrenaline sport done by only a few brave souls…
Ren Chapman prepares for a dive with a loaded and ready speargun while another diver rests, holding onto a dive-line to stay in position against the current. “Blood in the water – Predive” Continue reading »
Ice Bubbles Create Picturesque Scene at the Foot of the Rocky Mountains
Located at the foot of the Rocky Mountains on the North Saskatchewan River, the rare phenomenon occurs each winter in the man-made lake. The simple but stunning nature of the bubbles was captured on camera by a 40-year-old American photographer, Chip Phillips, who walked onto the lake for a better view of the scene. Ice bubbles occur during the months of November and March when the plants on the lake bed release methane gas, which freezes as it comes closer to the cold surface of the lake.
