Huge Cat Etched Into Peruvian Hillside Believed to Be Over 2,000 Years Old
Archaeologists recently discovered a giant cat ‘geoglpyh’ etched into a hillside in Peru and experts say it dates back to 200 B.C. to 100 B.C.
The giant cat stretches roughly 40 yards (36.5 meters) and was found at the historic Nazca Lines, an UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Nazca Lines are a group of very large geoglyphs made in the soil of the Nazca Desert in southern Peru. They were created between 500 BCE and 500 CE by people making depressions or shallow incisions in the desert floor, removing pebbles and leaving differently coloured dirt exposed. Continue reading »

Amazing Winning Photos from the 2024 Wildlife Photographer of the Year
The 2024 Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition has announced its winners from 59,228 submissions across 117 countries, showcasing the beauty and fragility of nature. Shane Gross, a Canadian marine conservation photojournalist, won the top prize for his stunning image “The Swarm of Life,” featuring a mesmerizing scene of western toad tadpoles underwater.
A selection of the top 100 images, celebrating the diversity of wildlife, will be displayed at the Natural History Museum in London until June 29, 2025, highlighting the importance of conservation through photography.

Spectacular Winning Images Of The 2022 Travel Photographer Of The Year Awards
The results of the annual Travel Photographer of the Year competition have been announced, with one of the last remaining Northern White rhinos in the world being the subject of the top prize-winning snapshot. Out of the 20,000 entries received, Matjaz Krivic’s photographs captured the judges’ attention, as he conveyed the poignant story of these animals trying to survive and revive their species from the brink of extinction.
Krivic, a documentary photographer with more than 25 years of experience, has been traveling the world and capturing various stories of people and places. Currently, he is focused on highlighting environmental issues and advocating for a better future. This is not the first time Krivic has participated in the competition; according to Travel Photographer of the Year, he has submitted entries every year since the contest’s inception in 2003. The judges of the competition praised his work, stating that he portrayed Kenya’s sad story beautifully and sensitively, with images that are both tender and intimate.

“Najin 33 one of the last two Northern White rhinos left in the world resting under a hot afternoon sun with her friend and caretaker Zachary Mutai in Ol Pejeta Conservancy. The northern white rhino is all but extinct. The two last males died several years ago. The two females are still with us, but too feeble to bear babies. In an Italian lab, their eggs are now artificially fertilized by sperm from the late males, and kept at minus 196 celsius, in hopes that surrogate rhinos from another sub species can carry the northern white back from the brink.” Continue reading »

Spectacular Winning Photos Of the 2022 Siena International Photo Awards
Here are the winning photos of the 2022 Siena International Photo Awards. Greek photographer Konstantinos Tsakalidis with “Woman from Evia” is the overall winner of this year. The shot captures the desperation of Kritsiopi Panayiota, an 81-year-old woman, as the flames are approaching her home during the serious forest fires that hit the country in summer 2021 and caused extensive environmental damage.
The image, selected from tens of thousands of images sent by photographers from 140 countries, will be on display in Siena from October 1st to November 20th, along with the winning photos of the 12 categories of the SIPA 2022, the Creative Photo Awards, Drone Photo Awards and the solo exhibitions of Danish Siddiqui (Indian photographer killed on 16 July 2021 while documenting the combat between Afghan troops and the Taliban), as well as exhibitions featuring the work of Ami Vitale, Dan Winters and Peter Mather.

Kritsiopi Panayiota, 81-years-old, reacts as a wildfire approaches her house. Amid the hottest and most long-lasting heatwave in the last 30 years, with temperatures reaching 47°C, hundreds of forest fires broke out across the country, severely hitting Greece’s second largest island. Thousands of residents and tourists were evacuated by boat. The fire, which raged uncontrollably for a week in the tinder-dry pine forests, destroyed more than 50,000 hectares of forest area and agricultural land, burned dozens of houses, and killed many animals. These incredible pictures offer a window to history that exists all around.
They are the winning and shortlisted images in the Historic Photographer of the Year Awards 2020, which were unveiled today by broadcaster and historian Dan Snow and historic and cultural travel experts Trip Historic. This year’s awards called on photographers to scour their photographic archive and ‘share their most astonishing imagery of those places which dominate our past’.
Winner: Where History Happened, Palmyra, Syria. “This image was taken before the civil war in Syria at the ancient city of Apamea. I’d dragged my family out of bed early, when it was cold and dark, to ensure we were at the Great Colonnade early enough to catch sunrise and the golden hour. I’d got my timings wrong and we were an hour early so sat around wondering where the sun had gone and waiting for dawn. It was worth the wait. I felt privileged at the time to have the opportunity to visit Apamea, but even more so since the civil war damaged some of these most impressive monuments”.
