Nat Geo Travel Contest Winners
First Place Winner: “Dig me river”. I was in Manaus/Amazon during the Brazilian Aquathlon (swimming and running) championship in. This river is called Rio Negro (Black River) due to water color. Rio Negro is the largest left tributary of the Amazon, the largest blackwater river in the world. While the name Rio Negro means Black River, its waters aren’t exactly black; they are similar in color to strong tea. The dark color comes from humic acid from incomplete breakdown of phenol. I photographed it from the water and my lens got completely wet, but there was so energy in this boys that I just didn’t worry about that. Location: Rio Negro, Ponta Negra Beach, Manaus, Amazon, Brazil. (Wagner Araujo/National Geographic Traveler Photo Contest) Continue reading »

To some plastic surgeons, a naturally stunning woman looks more like a work-in-progress. What does this somewhat terrifying reality say about the state of beauty in our culture? That’s what photographer Marc Erwin Babej wanted to explore in his new series, “Mask Of Perfection”. Babej worked with his close friend, plastic surgeon Maria LoTempio, to illustrate the difference between a woman’s natural beauty and the “correctable flaws” a plastic surgeon has been trained to see. Sea Creatures Come out for Coney Island’s Mermaid Parade
Revelers pose at the 2013 Mermaid Parade at Coney Island on June 22, 2013 in the Brooklyn borough of New York City. Coney Island was hard hit by Superstorm Sandy but parade organizers, whose offices were flooded, were able to raise $100,000 on Kickstarter to fund the parade. Serene Waters of Hawaii
Amazingly every wave produces different textures from the last – from powerful blasts rushing over calmer water to gentle waves splashing together. Photographer Bryce Groark, is no stranger to the fascinating waves having lived on the island for 13 years and becoming inspired by other photographers snapping the water. But ironically after trying it for himself, he was drawn to those images where he missed the crest of the wave and instead preferred the ones where the wave had already crashed. Continue reading »

Free Dive Hunters
Eyeconic Images is the partnership of DJ Struntz and Logan Mock-Bunting, two internationally renowned photographers with a passion for story-telling, image-making and the ocean.
Spearfishing is a type of hunting done with underwater guns, harpoons and strong line. Freediving is a type of breath-hold diving in which divers descend for the duration of one breath, without any SCUBA tanks or any breathing apparatus. The best freedivers can hold their breath for over five minutes and go deeper than 100 feet. The combination of both these skills makes a high adrenaline sport done by only a few brave souls…
Ren Chapman prepares for a dive with a loaded and ready speargun while another diver rests, holding onto a dive-line to stay in position against the current. “Blood in the water – Predive” Continue reading »
Ice Bubbles Create Picturesque Scene at the Foot of the Rocky Mountains
Located at the foot of the Rocky Mountains on the North Saskatchewan River, the rare phenomenon occurs each winter in the man-made lake. The simple but stunning nature of the bubbles was captured on camera by a 40-year-old American photographer, Chip Phillips, who walked onto the lake for a better view of the scene. Ice bubbles occur during the months of November and March when the plants on the lake bed release methane gas, which freezes as it comes closer to the cold surface of the lake.
