Close-Up Cuisine

What exactly are we eating?

That’s the question that Caren Alpert sets out to answer in her “Terra Cibus” series of micrographs of food. (Terra cibus means, loosely, sustenance from the land.) Ms. Alpert, a San Francisco-based food photographer, got the idea a couple of years ago as more people were starting to ask about the origins of their meals. Now she’s captured the minute details of food, from almonds to Oreos, with the help of a scanning electron microscope.

iPad App Gives Users Superman-Style X-Ray Vision

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have X-ray vision? Well a new iPad app has made that possible.

From complex engines and sports bikes to the humble desk lamp and kitchen toaster, the ‘X is for X-Ray‘ app has 26 objects that only Superman’s X-ray vision could expect to reveal. Using new X-ray technologies Hugh Turvey, Artist in Residence at the Royal Institute for Radiology, mapped objects in three dimensions in both X-ray and solid form.

Lego Recreates Year 2011 From UC Davis to Royal Wedding

When The Guardian began posting pictures of a giant Lego Christmas tree being erected in London’s St. Pancras Station, the newspaper’s Flickr account inspired users to create 3D Lego pictures of 2011, giving “the year’s news” through a series of submissions done entirely in Lego blocks.

Encompassing everything from the pie-ing of Rubert Murdoch to Obama and his national security team in the war room, from the topical and silly to the powerful and transcendent, these artists created not just scenes but occasionally entire worlds within their Lego creations.

Awesome and Free Birdy Twitter Icons

The Amazing Twitter Birds

“After a huge success that we had with Ugly Birds for Twitter we have decided to continue development of icons that our users could use for Twitter. This time we’ve decided to cover all possible styles and implement them on the same bird’s shape. This is what we’ve come up with so far, but it is work in progress and we would like to extend this list, so if you have ideas for other interesting styles that we haven’t covered yet, do send us a tweet @designcontests and we may include it into the next release.” Continue reading »

iPad2 Halloween Costume

A description of a relatively simple Halloween costume using 2 iPad2s to make it look like you have a huge hole in your torso. You’ll also need a MiFi hotspot (if you don’t have a WiFi network available where you want to use the costume). Basically you start a FaceTime chat between the iPads and then tape one to your front and one to your back. Add a little red paint and you’re good to go. It’s supposed to look like you have a gaping hole in your torso. If you spend more time than I did on the blood and the flesh part and lining up the iPads it could look pretty cool.

What’s Cooking, Uncle Sam?

Some of us might like to reinstate this food guide from World War II because butter has its own food group. (National Archives, Records of the Office of Government Reports)

Food. We love it, fear it, and obsess about it.

We demand that our Government ensure that it is safe, cheap, and abundant. In response, Government has been a factor in the production, regulation, research, innovation, and economics of our food supply. It has also attempted, with varying success, to change the eating habits of Americans.

From the farm to the dinner table, explore the records of the National Archives that trace the Government’s effect on what Americans eat. Continue reading »

Spitting Ink

http://vimeo.com/26003454

Spitting Ink follows eight spoken word artists as they traverse the streets, perform in situ, and talk about their motivation to write.

In the United States, a poetry subculture has grown up around a group of young, spoken-word artists. Although the work they produce is widely diverse, it tends to have a strong affinity with contemporary social reality and urban culture. The poets’ work is not aimed at a mass audience, and they perform in small clubs. Each of them has found his or her own way to focus the power of the spoken word. Spitting Ink is a portrait of some of these artists. Interviews and live performances are interspersed with images of the streets of New York — not the orderly, well-to-do neighborhoods, but their lively and sometimes dilapidated backstreet counterparts, with their graffiti-covered walls, subway trains, and bars. Spoken-word artist Mike Ladd speaks about this poetry’s origins and background (its roots in gospel and other forms) and about how it reached a turning point with the arrival of rap. Beau Sia creates poetry both to impress the girls and to rebut prejudices about his Asiatic roots; Celena Glenn only writes once a year, when her head is full to overflowing and dozens of poems suddenly stream out.
