Curated from 91 photographers, 107 stories and a whopping 2,290,225 photos, National Geographic has unveiled its top 50 images of 2016. From Russian roof-toppers risking their lives to the atrocities of war, here are some of the most extraordinary moments captured in 2016.

National Geographic Nature Photographer Of The Year 2016 Winners
The annual National Geographic travel photographer of the year contest attracted 10,000 entries worldwide this year. Selected from thousands of entries, an underwater photo of sardine predation off the Wild Coast of South Africa was selected as the winning image for the 2016 National Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year contest. 1st Place-Action + Grand Prize: Sardine Run
During the sardine migration along the Wild Coast of South Africa, millions of sardines are preyed upon by marine predators such as dolphins, marine birds, sharks, whales, penguins, sailfishes, and sea lions. The hunt begins with common dolphins that have developed special hunting techniques to create and drive bait balls to the surface. In recent years, probably due to overfishing and climate change, the annual sardine run has become more and more unpredictable. Nei Valente is a 27 year old Brazilian designer and street photographer. He is currently living in NYC and working at Brand Union. His latest series, “NYC newsstand”, tries to portray the current reality of the classic New York newsstands and the characters that live in and through them to create the debate about their future in the digital era. The series dialogues with the 1994 Moyra Davey series “Newsstands” that shows a completely different reality and aesthetic. Nei finds that the interesting thing about having a lot of portraits in the same theme is that you can compare and analyze how are they adapting to this new world and observe that while some keep the magazines and newspapers in front, others are giving priority to candies, snacks and souvenirs.
