Artists in Pakistan Target Drones with Giant Posters of Child Victims

In this undated handout photograph from the “Inside Out Project”, a poster bearing the image of a Pakistani girl whose parents, lawyers say, were killed in a drone strike, lies in a field at an undisclosed location in the northwestern Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province. A group of artists in Pakistan are hoping to generate “empathy” among US drone operators by placing giant posters of children in the country’s troubled tribal regions. The work, which is titled #NotABugSplat, was made with the help of French street artist JR who plans to unveil portraits from around the world at the Pantheon in Paris as part of a project called “Inside Out”. “Bug splat” is said to be a term used by drone pilots based in the US to refer to how victims look when seen through video cameras. Since 2004, no region of the world has been targeted by US drones more than Pakistan’s tribal districts which border Afghanistan, and are home to Taliban and Al-Qaeda militants. According to the Bureau of Investigative Journalism, these strikes have killed at least 2,296 people and 416 civilians. (Photo by AFP Photo)

Best Wedding Present Ever? Photographer Remakes Hollywood Posters Starring Bride and Groom

In a world where love is patient and love is kind, one couple refused to play by the rules. This summer, they’re going to the chapel and someone’s going to get … buried!

OK, so it was actually last fall, and no one died in a fiery blast. But these parodies of Hollywood blockbuster posters for the marriage of David DiCicco and Rachael Batts are still epic enough to make Michael Bay consider a second career as a wedding planner.

The posters were the work of the Virginia couple’s close friend, Nashville-based photographer and designer Andres Martinez. After helping them create a Casablanca-themed save-the-date card, Martinez spent about a month creating a series of posters starring DiCicco and Batts, who displayed them at their wedding reception. Ramachandraiah prints movie posters for a living. He’s done it ever since 1971, when he bought an ancient lithograph press. He keeps it in a factory north of Bangalore, far from the English town where it was built 111 years ago.

His are five-color, hand-drawn, and measure just 20 inches by 30 inches. They’re printed on thin paper, and illegally slapped up on building sites and highway overpasses late at night. They cost pennies to print. And they’re absolutely gorgeous. Continue reading »

Casa Rex wins award at HOW Poster Design Awards 2011

Casa Rex, one of Brazil’s most creative and renowned agencies, has won an award at the HOW Poster Design Awards 2011. The poster ‘The Occupied Space’ has been chosen as one of the top 10 winners, out of almost 800 entries.

In order to advertise an exhibition promoted by Escola Viva whereby students and teachers were invited to arrive at the school, walk around and ‘occupy’ the diverse spaces within the school environment, Casa Rex has made bold use of the “empty” white space, using text that is scattered across the poster in random directions. “We invert what is traditionally seen as the correct occupied space in a poster”, jokes Gustavo Piqueira, creative director and head of the agency.

This is the 6th time that Casa Rex has earned an award by HOW magazine, which showcases the best in design from around the world. Earlier this year the HOW International Design Awards went to the packaging design developed for the Dixie Toga Holographic Collection of Empty Packs, as well as the graphic design for the book “Writings about Jade” (Ateliê Editorial); in 2010 the covers created for the “Saraiva Classics” book collection (Edições Jogo de Amarelinha) and also the graphic project for the “Cool Readings” collection (Ed. Biruta) were selected; and in 2008 the award was given for the the Paideia book collection covers (Ed. Martins Fontes).
