“We Take Rusty Old Junk And We Put Love Into It” – Detroit’s Custom Cycles

Photo by Jason Walker/Slow Roll Monday Nights

The old Motor City has a unique style in bicycles these days: from fat wheels and fake fuel tanks to stretched cycles with powerful sound systems – and even a family-sized BBQ. “Detroit’s custom bike scene developed alongside Slow Roll, a weekly cycle ride started in 2010 by Jason Hall and Mike MacKool. Now upwards of 2,000 people turn up each Monday to cruise a different part of the city. The week I go the crowd seems evenly split between black and white, male and female, city and suburbs. It’s the most inclusive cycle event I’ve ever witnessed”. Continue reading »

Detroit Then And Now: An Artist Combined Historic Pictures Of Detroit With Modern Photographs

1
According to photographer Flora Borsi:”The City of Detroit has gone through a major economic and demographic decline in recent decades. The population of the city has fallen from a high of 1,850,000 in 1950 to 701,000 in 2013. The automobile industry in Detroit has suffered from global competition and has moved much of the remaining production out of Detroit. Not so very long ago, Detroit was a rich, beautiful city, full of vibrant people. I have been there twice recently and I was saddened by the status of the abandoned buildings and factories I saw. I imagined how the city, its streets and buildings might have looked in past decades. I found pictures from the previous century and combined them with the photographs I took during my most recent visit to Detroit. What if these people from the past could see their beloved place now? Could Detroit rise again? I hope so.” Continue reading »

Then-and-Now Photos of Abandoned Detroit School

To “raise awareness of the social and economic challenges the city of Detroit,” the folks at Detroiturbex decided to tell the story about an abandoned Lewis Cass Technical High School with the help of superimposed then-and-now photos. First, they photographed every room the old Detroit school, which was abandoned after a 2007 fire. Then they put the pictures of the buzzing life from the past on top of them.

These sad pictures are a mirror of today’s Detroit. The city has suffered tremendous population increases and then rapid declines. Today, Detroit is designed for 2 million people, however, less than 1/3 or ~ 700 thousands have remained in the city. The infrastructure, built at the time of the population boom, stands abandoned, run down and an easy target for arsonists.

The city is in need of the change, and such projects definitely bring it one step closer. Continue reading »
