* About 5 years ago I witnessed several mentally retarded guys butchering pigs at a farm. It was sort of hypnotic, primeval show, with every move extremely precise. Some of those guys were not able to count to 10, and that is approximately how many seconds the whole process took.

* Behind the fence of a private house in Gusinoozersk (Republic of Buryatia) I saw a bomb. I went inside and the owner said her husband had brought it from the proving ground and installed it in the yard. I managed to find out by the numbers on the frame that this is a mock weapon that is used to work on the precision of air strikes. According to an ex military, people used to pick up those bombs after the training, welded them and went on using them as water barrels in their gardens.

* Most of the buildings built during the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railroad (Transbaikal territory) have neither central heating not water supply. Residents simply carry water from wells to their homes and they heat their homes with firewood. According to the residents it is cheaper than the utility payments in new houses with heating and water.

Больше информации можно узнать на сайте Каритас в Западной Сибири http://caritas-siberia.org/ • In Novosibirsk there is one of the most impressive services in Russia that prevent social orphanage and support single mothers in hard situation. Simply put, the program helps women resolve their problems and not let their children be taken to the orphanages. The program includes: • a shelter where women with children can live, • day stay where mothers can come at the working hours, • social service that helps resolve psychological, law and other problems, • care service that helps women at their homes, • kindergarten where babies can stay while their mothers work. The program has been working for 20 years. In this time more than 300 families went through the shelter (average time of living in the shelter is 6-8 months) and about 1200 families received help at day stay. ••• Katia is playing hide and seek in the yard of «Narnia» children's club (non-profit organization «Caritas», Novosibirsk, Russia). Started several years ago as a religious Sunday school for kids, today it functions as social rehabilitation center. It's a place where children from socially weak families gather every day as well as kids of migrants from Central Asia. Narnia provides them with food, play classes and psychological support. Kids learn social skills, how to cook, do school homework and help each other.
