“Demons in the Details”: Macabre Masterpieces and Escher-Inspired Ink Illusions by Matt Reid

Matt Reid is a Sydney-based Australian illustrator and full-time artist renowned for his striking black-and-white drawings that delve into the macabre, featuring intricate depictions of skulls, demons, and monsters inspired by Gothic fiction and his childhood love for dark doodles.

His style emphasizes crisp line work, cross-hatching for shading, and solid contrasts achieved through markers and Photoshop enhancements, drawing influences from masters like Gustave Dore, M.C. Escher, and modern poster artists such as The Godmachine, Dan Mumford, and Richey Beckett. Reid transitioned from casual sketching to a professional career around 2016-2017, when his social media presence exploded, leading to commissions, exhibitions like Illuxcon, and a booming print sales business that now supports him full-time. His portfolio includes thematic pieces like spooky season tributes (e.g., Black Phillip from The VVitch) and collaborations in music and film-inspired art, blending horror with a clean, powerful aesthetic that evokes excitement amid the grim.
