Gérard DuBois Creates Thought‑provoking Images With Slight Surreal Twists Asking Viewers To Reread The Story Through The Picture

Gérard DuBois is a French‑born, Canada‑based visual artist and illustrator known for quietly surreal, narrative images that blend classical painting sensibility with contemporary editorial bite.

Working largely in traditional media (acrylic, oil, gouache) and then adapting for print, he creates atmospheric scenes with muted colour, careful light and slightly distorted figures that feel like stills from strange short stories, often made for magazines, book covers and picture books. His work has been widely published (including in outlets like Harper’s Magazine) and celebrated with awards such as multiple American Illustration selections, making him one of the key voices in contemporary narrative illustration.
