Carpe Diem Calendar 2014

A disappearing, a dying function is a good occasion for a gravestone oration. One can trample upon a function’s grave, thereby freeing oneself from the function’s burden. It does not imply a deconstruction of an alive function, rather – a work with the mental body’s memory, the phantom pain of the mental, which prevents the fleeting – the modern-day offline calendar – from eroding beyond repair. Dismembered Barbie Jewelry Inspires Complex Meditations on the Doll

In deconstructing Barbie dolls and repurposing them as jewelry for “Plastic Bodies Series,” the designer Margaux Lange forces us to enter an uncomfortable space between disgust and worship of the iconic toy. Barbie, who has been a target of the last decades’ feminist debate, occupies an ambiguous role in the social and sexual development of girls; she exudes sexuality with her adult figure, but she also remains virginal, never revealing her nipples or genitalia. The Walking Bread

The Walking Bread is an art series depicting scenes from a certain similar sounding TV show (which itself returns on the 9th of February), only with the twist that all the characters are made out of bread. That’s right.. Bread!! A mixture of parody and downright creativity bring to life a miniature world in a way that captures the imagination. A moody zombie bread slice – scoops jam from the disembowelled body of another bread character in one scene.

Mark Nathan Willetts is the artist behind the series. He came up with the idea after jotting down some wordplay ideas for illustrations, and then decided with a moment of Eureka to take it a step further. Each of the characters were cut from a single slice of bread to make it seem as if they had just climbed straight out of a loaf. To further embellish the scenes, a range of buffet related items were used such as: cocktails sticks, BBQ grill etc. Finally lighting design was used to capture a comic book feel reminiscent of the Walking Dead comic book covers.

There are fourteen pictures covering 10 unique and fun scenes. Just be careful because this bread bites back! Continue reading »

Burger Kitchen Restaurant in Warsaw

Upscale burger joints aren’t exactly breaking news. In fact, it’s pretty surprising that the trend hasn’t tailed off already. Testament to the fact, we guess, that a decent burger and some rough ‘n’ ready decor go a long way.

The latest place in Warsaw to take a ride on the wave is Burger Kitchen. You’ll know what to expect, as they’ve ticked a fair share of the usual boxes: 100% Angus beef patties, brioche buns, warehouse-y space in a state of fabricated dilapidation. Once you dig a little deeper, though, it’s clear that these guys have gone the extra distance to distinguish themselves. The homemade ketchups, tomato and jalapeno, bring the tang in a big way, and form a winning combo with the hyper-crunchy, skin-on, triple-fried fries (cooked in trans fat-free veggie oil).

Burger-wise, the house special — with caramelized red onion marmalade, Mimolette cheese and Calabrian sausage — is a solid option, but for our money, keep it simple and go for the classic cheeseburger. The pickles are crisp, cheese oozes out the side and the fresh onion gives it just the right amount of zing. Admittedly, the burgers could be bigger and are a touch pricey at around 25zł (without sides). There’s a silver lining in tow though: You’ll have room for their awesome, creamy NYC-style cheesecake. Chinese Restaurant Owner Told to Pull Down Two Gigantic 50ft Naked Buddhas from Establishment’s Roof

Photo: HAP / Quirky China News / REX

A Chinese restaurant has removed two naked 50ft statues of Buddha from its roof just two days after putting them up because they offended believers. The statues were a reference to a old Chinese wives’ tale involving Buddhist monks, which features one of them scrambling over a wall to try some soup. Buddhist followers, known for their peaceful ways, were so angered by their religions leader being used as an advert that they began protesting outside the eatery, demanding the figures be taken down.
