China: The Land Where Fake Brands Reign Supreme
Shamelessly, China has dubbed itself as “the king of counterfeiters” and the city of Nanjing, east of Shanghai, prides itself on the imminent grand opening of a new shopping centre dedicated to some 58 fake brands of merchandise. These imposters bear strong resemblances to their original inspirations, but are often differentiated by an intentionally mis-spelled letter or two.
Counterfeit goods have been the bane of the world trade industry for decades, and China, while a blatant culprit, is far from the only one. The dynamics of the infringement varies from breaches of product patents in industrial and technical products to illegal reproductions of copyright entertainment material to fake luxury brands. Combo: Provocative French Street Art
On a recent trip to Chernobyl, French street artist Combo left behind something memorable: a mural of The Simpsons. Combo is known for using iconic characters to make a statement, and this image continues the trend. The nuclear power plant in the background looks a lot more menacing here, but I also think there’s something really interesting about such a happy, cheery image juxtaposed against the aftermath of a horrible tragedy. Fine by Virgilio Villoresi
Fine is the story of birth, life and death of a soldier, represented on a hand (mine, for instance).
The movie is inspired by the concept of handpainting, very close to the works of italian artist Mariotti and the finger videos movement. Dedicated transitions created with the technique of the shuft pan has been used to create a true cinematografic editing through the hand.
Both the initial and final soundtrack, as well as the military salute of the last scene are a hommage to Jiri Trnka’s masterpiece “The Hand”.

The polka dot-obsessed octogenerian artist Yayoi Kusama’s work has gone from free love and foraging in the 50s and 60s to infinity rooms filled with mirrors and twinkling lights in this decade. Her life has seen body parties in Andy Warhol’s Factory and friendships with Georgia O’Keeffe, Donald Judd and Joseph Cornell – and this retrospective takes it all in. Peugeot take you behind the scenes of the making of their latest TV ad, crafted entirely from paper. There are dozens of paper cuts, hundreds of Peugeot models and an infinite amount of patience.
Peugeot didn’t take the easy option and animate in CGI. They looked for something different, something more authentic and crafted to reflect Peugeot’s philosophy for designing their vehicles. With that in mind, Peugeot asked London designer Kyle Bean and director Joseph Mann to make this Peugeot commercial entirely from paper.

His are five-color, hand-drawn, and measure just 20 inches by 30 inches. They’re printed on thin paper, and illegally slapped up on building sites and highway overpasses late at night. They cost pennies to print. And they’re absolutely gorgeous. Continue reading »
