Amazing Award-Winning Photos Of The Wildlife Photographer Of The Year 2017 Contest
11-14 years old category. Stuck In by Ashleigh Scully, USA.

Deep snow had blanketed the Lamar valley in Yellowstone national park, Wyoming, and the day was cold and overcast. This female American red fox was hunting beside the road, stepping quietly across the crusty surface of the snow. The image, says Ashleigh, “illustrates the harsh reality of winter life in Yellowstone”. (Photo by Ashleigh Scully/Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2017) Continue reading »
Photographer David Yeo Places Naturally Small Species Alongside Animals That Have Been Selectively Bred To Be Tiny And Cute
“I arrived to photograph this west African dwarf goat with a pocketed coat. I quickly saw that wouldn’t work out so rushed to the nearest town where I spotted the bag. The bag was weighted down with a brick so the goat wouldn’t knock it over, and to my surprise the handle of the bag framed the goat’s head perfectly”. Spectacular Winners Of The US Nature’s Best Photography Contest 2017
Grand Prize. African Lionesses, Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya: Lions are the only truly social cats; the females and offspring reside together in prides. Typically hunting in groups, the lionesses prey mostly on large hoofed mammals. Within each pride, females will often reproduce in synchrony and cross-suckle their cubs. “It was early morning in the Great Rift Valley as we searched for a famous pride of lionesses. Since it was very cold, the females were piled on top of each other, forming groups and staying close. This particular set grabbed my attention because they were staring glassy-eyed in different directions. I wanted to capture all possible details in the frame with a tight crop to make a striking black and white conversion”. This photo was made in my hometown, called Thiersee, a small village in the heart of the Alps (Tyrol, Austria). I had to wait till the lake thiersee, which is frozen all the wintertime, begins to melt in spring.Just for a few days you can see these natural patterns in the melting ice. But not without a drone. So I told my daughter to make a boat trip with her red kayak. Till now nobody in my hometown tell me how the patterns grow. (Because nobody know that they exist). (Photo and caption by Stefan Thaler/National Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year contest) Continue reading »
