Subject: Spider’s Web
I took this photograph in an empty field one September morning, when the sun was still low in the sky; I was surrounded by spiders’ webs, which had been weaved on plants, and I became mesmerised by the beauty of the light falling on them. Managing Mental Health (single image): Untangling by Jameisha Prescod
“The isolation of lockdown exacerbated London film maker Jameisha Prescod’s depression, as she spent most of her time in the concentrated chaos of this room. “It’s where I work a full-time job, eat, sleep, catch up with friends and most importantly cry.” Before long, she felt like she was “drowning in the clutter”. For escape, she turned to knitting, which helps to soothe her mind. It may not be a cure, but it does at least put “everything else on pause” for a while.” Continue reading »

Abstract Photographer: 1st Place Winner by Daniel Dencescu
Murmurations. This series of starling murmurations (more than a hundred thousand birds), which form abstract landscapes in the sky in a sublime musical rhythm was captured in a 120 seconds window on 1st January 2016 in Rome. I still remember my reaction when I saw it for the first time. I had to quickly take my camera and start photographing it. With this series I want to present to you the beautiful shapes, forms and abstraction of the dancing starlings, who suddenly twist and turn in the sky making beautiful abstract patterns. I want to reveal the hidden beauty of common things shown from an unusual perspective of an elegant dance. Continue reading »

The 11 Winners Of The Prestigious 2021 Audubon Bird Photography Contest
Each year the National Audubon Society, an American non-profit organization dedicated to bird protection and environmental conservation, hosts the Audubon Photography Awards, and they have recently announced their winners and honorable mentions of 2021. This year’s Grand Prize winner is Caroline Fraser with her captivating and magical photo of the greater roadrunner captured in Texas. Though Caroline’s photo is truly amazing, other nominated photos were no worse, and Steven Jessmore’s picture of the northern cardinal was my personal favorite. Anyhow, check it out and enjoy! I’m certain you too will find a favorite or learn some interesting lore about bird species shown here.
Amateur Award Winner: Robin Ulery Species: Sandhill Crane. Location: Johns Lake, Winter Garden, Florida
Story Behind the Shot: For three years I’ve watched a pair of Sandhill Cranes that nest near my house, observing and photographing them from my kayak. On a blustery day this spring, I took my camera and paddled out to check on them. Two colts had finally hatched. The wind, though, made for a challenging photo shoot. There was no solid land to anchor to, and I bounced up and down, sometimes missing the birds completely. So I increased my shutter speed and ISO to compensate. Capturing this scene under those conditions felt like a once-in-a-lifetime moment. Continue reading »

Wellcome Photography Prize has announced its 2021 shortlist. Now in its third year, the 2021 prize covers three areas of interest which reflect Wellcome’s three worldwide health challenge areas – mental health, global heating and infectious disease.
The shortlist comprises 90 photos by 31 professional, amateur and student photographers, from across the world. Covering topics from the impact of Covid-19 on transgender women in Jakarta, to rising temperatures in the Arctic Ocean, to addiction and the process of recovery, the prize aims to tell provocative visual stories and challenge preconceptions of these urgent health issues of our time.
Managing Mental Health (single image). Disconnected by Kate Rosewell. “Experiences of dissociation involve feeling separated from yourself, like watching your life as if it were a film. Distanced self-portraits such as this one capture a sense of that for Kate Rosewell, and help her to make sense of what’s in her mind. Dissociation can be a way of deflecting intense trauma, but it can also occur in less extreme situations, not least the isolation of lockdown, which in another way has separated so many of us from reality”.
