The Kennel Club has received almost 10,000 entries came in from over 70 different countries around the world, including the UK, China, Israel, Russia, Argentina and South Africa for it’s “The Dog Photographer of the Year 2018”. Monica van der Maden from the Netherlands has been chosen as the overall winner of the competition with an image of Noa the Great Dane seemingly alone in a forest, which placed first in the ‘Oldies’ category, the first time an image from this particular group has been picked as an overall winner. Monica began taking photos of dogs eighteen years ago and has been professionally snapping man’s best friend for the best part of a decade. Continue reading »

The Environmental Photographer of the Year competition awards those who use their creative skills to document the state of the planet. The five photographs were selected as winners from 89 countries, for their powerful storytelling abilities and high-quality techniques. The annual contest is run by The Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM), a leading independent Chartered professional body for water and environment professionals.

Grand Prize. African Lionesses, Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya: Lions are the only truly social cats; the females and offspring reside together in prides. Typically hunting in groups, the lionesses prey mostly on large hoofed mammals. Within each pride, females will often reproduce in synchrony and cross-suckle their cubs. “It was early morning in the Great Rift Valley as we searched for a famous pride of lionesses. Since it was very cold, the females were piled on top of each other, forming groups and staying close. This particular set grabbed my attention because they were staring glassy-eyed in different directions. I wanted to capture all possible details in the frame with a tight crop to make a striking black and white conversion”. Royal Society Photo Contest Winners Capture Breathtaking Details Of Our Rapidly Changing World
From a swirling dance of mating mayflies to a lone clownfish swimming amongst a field of bone-white sea anemones, the top photos chosen for the Royal Society Publishing’s second annual nature photography contest showcase small but significant moments in a rapidly-changing world. While these images might not seem earth-shattering, their subtle subjects inspire new ways of looking at the natural world.
Special commendation. “Butterflies and caiman” by Mark Cowan.
Colourful butterflies gather on the head of this caiman to collect salt – an important mineral for their survival. This photo was taken while on a scientific expedition to the Amazon to study reptile and amphibian diversity. The expedition was led by researchers from the Herpetology Division at the University of Michigan and included participants from Peru and Australia. A number of minerals are a scarce resource throughout Amazonia and so this behaviour allows these invertebrates access to salt, much like the clay licks that are used by a variety of vertebrates. This particular phenomenon where butterflies and bees congregate on the heads and around the eyes of caimans and turtles has been documented before but what is unique here is the simultaneous number of butterfly species and the way in which each species is associated with its own kind.
